Short version:
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is guilty of abuse of power, according to a probe by the state legislature.

Long version:

BBC wrote:

Mrs Palin was accused of sacking a senior state official, Walter Monegan, in connection with a family feud.

She allegedly fired him for refusing to sack a state trooper who was in a bitter custody battle with her sister.

The verdict of the state legislature could have a significant effect on Republicans hopes of winning the US presidential election next month.

Mrs Palin, who is John McCain's running mate, denies any improper behaviour.

"I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110 (a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act," investigator Steve Branchflower concluded in the 263-page report.

But Alaskan state Senator Gary Stevens, a Republican, said there were "some problems" with the finding.

"I would encourage people to be very cautious, to look at this with a jaundiced eye," said Senator Stevens, after it was announced the report would be released.

What effect will this have on the election?  Does this seal the nail in the Republican coffin?

I dunno, I'd take Adriana Lima as my president over Obama or McCain any day of the week.

QFE. Her gender is irrelevant.

Nothing's going to change because of this. It already looks like McCain's losing. Palin fans won't believe it, and nothing will happen to her because of it. At worst, she'll lose the next gubernatorial election, get re-elected as Mayor and come back as Governor again in a few years.

True...they already pre-empted the decision by complaining that the people doing the probe were all "liberal democrats" looking to make her and McCain look bad...

The Republican coffin has been sealed for some time ... no effect on the election.  Besides, (if I understand this correctly) this is merely a one-sided political finding, and the "defense" refused to participate.

I'll try that the next time I need to beat a murder charge.

In retrospect it didn't help their cause.

Except that this "guilty" verdict is meaningless, except that the state might be now liable for a lawsuit.  The legislature is not a "court", yet legislatures try to be courts all the time in the United States.  It is just a political technique that they do far too often ... probably akin to a "vote of no confidence" that is sometimes done in other places around the world.

Yep. Even though the probe was led by 10 Republicans and 4 Democrats.

Wow, is Alaska full of idiots? No wonder she got elected in the first place.

Her lawyer wrote:

"In order to violate the ethics law, there has to be some personal gain," said Thomas Van Flein.

"Mr Branchflower has failed to identify any financial gain."
So...since when has personal gain been restricted to financial gain? That's correct, never.

Not financial gain no. Satisfaction of revenge on her soon to be ex brother in law and gets to give a big hi five to her sister could be considered.

I know what the real personal gain was. I was merely pointing out how stupid her lawyer was to either think or argue that personal gain is restricted to increasing wealth.

Yeah its the only move they got. And the line that states she fired him through proper proceedings. The reason doesn't matter.

Yet all the specious associations with Ayers are valid? Nice selective criticism there.

Vigdis Finnbogadottir?
Tarja Halonen?

..to name a few.

Both did/have done an outstanding job. Gender/Ethnicity/Age are all irrelevant. I wouldn't like to see the McCain/Palin-combo in the White House because of.. ..it would make GWB actually look like a good prez in comparison. IMHO.

look at page 8 'findings'.
Says clearly that while it was in her power to sack people, she did it for personnal reasons. So she abused her powers.

The Republicans are fucked. Final nail in the coffin. Only a terrorist attack can save them now.
