Portal: Prelude, as its name states it, is an unofficial prequel to the game Portal. Its story revolves around the pre-GlaDOS epoch, even before she was plugged in. At this time, test subjects were monitored by real Aperture Science employees whose work was tedious, lengthy and repetitive. This is why they decided to build a great artificial intelligence that could both replace them in these difficult tasks, but also take responsibility for many other tasks within the complex and compete with Black Mesa's superiority. All employees of the Aperture Science complex are now eagerly awaiting GlaDOS. Maybe even a little too eagerly, as the upcoming events will tell...

It's a new mod for portal with 19 new test chambers and a plot that seems to be quite interesting.

It'll be released in 9 october 2008 18:00:00 EST

It looks like a really good mod but it's still a mod which tend to be, for want of a better word, "meh". I'm not sure why they chose to make a prelude seeing as Valve's next official Portal title is also a prelude and will most likely contradict everything they're doing. Also the fact that the Aperture offices are already in a state of disrepair, (stained walls etc,) takes away from the authenticity.

That being said I'll still give it a shot. I'm sure these guys have done a good job.

This looks pretty sweet! Except I'm sad it's unofficial And like OH said, no GlaDOS!? That sort of takes away the whole dark humor of the game. I hope they have some sort of voice or outside character saying something. I really don't want to be running around on my own the whole time. That's part of the reason I love the game so much, it's not about the puzzles, but the atmosphere the game creates. Portal did it amazingly, and Portal: TFV did it pretty well, too.

Eh but if it's free, what could I lose?

Wait, seriously? Because I read ModDB's review and they said the game had computer-synthesized human voices, which just sounded robotic and much of the banter "fell flat". If they do add it in, though, that'll be a very welcome addition. Humans talking like robots will pretty much ruin it.

I'm not certain, but I had that music for years, aquired it from the internets which is why I'm not certain.

I've only played through a few of the test chambers, but I can't say I'm a big fan. It almost seems a bit broken at points. You'll know what to do, and do exactly what they want you to do, yet it'll take many many tries just to get an extra inch of height or length based on where you jump into a portal; little things like that.

Also, the robotic voices that are supposed to be human are really just annoying.

There's definitely a challenge though, and it's fun trying to use portals in new and interesting ways.

So far I like Portal TFV mappack better, especially since it lasted so long. But then again, I'm just getting started with this one, so I'll have my final verdict in a while.
