I've recently reformatted. Installed BF2, did that with no hicups, but it won't start and gives this error

All is legit, since I actually paid for this game I would like to install it from the CD

those errors are different to the one I get.
I for got to mention, I only get that error if I run in a window.
Just a CTD if it's full screen

Have you tried reinstalling DX9?
When you reformatted did you install an OS that's been changed in any way?
I had a similar problem when I used a version of vista with a lot of stuff ripped out, it had problems with installing bf2's edited directx files.

ok after just giving up because I was tired and had work.
I decided to just install 2142 and play that, but same problem has now arisen.
Bf2 actually worked before I tried to patch it though.
I've just installed 2142, DL'ed the 1.5 full patch, it patched around 50-75% then "patch failed"
(bf2 was only patching to 5%ish)
Anyone know what could be causing the patches to fail?
