4870 or 9800?

Would there be noticeable difference on the BFG GeForce GTX 280

would it be worth it over that 4870?

If you are going to push your budget to buy a GTX280, Don't. Save for a 4870X2 or get a 4870. ATi are in the driver's seat atm, so it's best to go for their products if you want best performance.

Ok cool, can't afford the 4870x2... and the 1 gig version of the 4870 is showing as pre order with no due in date.

So would the 512 meg one I linked be good enough?

It depends on what you're gonna use it for. The 4870 is faster at games, but the 9800 is faster at everything else.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
