I'd say take the pipes apart. If you get it in front of the clog, when it gets unclogged, all the water behind the clog will now be on you. Delicious.

As the son of a plumber, you should first try a plunger. Should that not work, use a plumbing snake. You shouldn't put that directly into the toilet, first try to find a release valve on the pipe that leaves the toilet, and put the snake in there in the direction of the toilet. Also go in the opposite direction just in case that's clogged as well. If there is no release valve, which there should be, then you can put the snake inside the toilet bowl, but you might crack or scratch it.

NEVER, NEVER use some kind of "Liquid Plumber" or "Draino" whatever the hell that stuff is, that expands in the pipes and cleans it. That stuff it crap, doesn't work, and will most likely clog up your pipes further. Or if you have really old pipes, it will eat away at that and make wonderful little holes.

Just for the record, never use those bowl cleaners that you strap on to the side of the bowl. You have no idea how many fall off and end up getting flushed, making a massive clog. Only use the ones that go inside the tank, not the bowl.

I took a painful shit this morning. I felt like I had given birth to this giant lincoln log. And it had "perfectly" gone into the hole in the toilet, so it took two flushes to get it to go down.

The other day I took an even more epic shit, one turd was the entire length of the toilet bowl.
