This game is pure awesome.

If you enjoy games like supreme commander, galactic civilizations, civ4, homeworld etc. then you will love this. Epic space battles in real time, your main ships level up and get stronger, you order huge fleets of hundreds of ships around, there's base building (more like planet development), orbital bombardments, resource farming etc.

Some reviews:

The IGN video review is very nice

One small note is that it's very much worth buying this game, it's made by some small time developers who need support and if we don't fund the industry we can never expect good things (a la EA). Psychonauts was a great game but underperformed and the developers' next project looks like it will suck as they are trying to appeal to mainstream gamers (ie the ones who pay).

Finally, something I can use my $157 worth of Best Buy gift cards on!

EDIT: Also, does it take place in 3-dimensions?

EVERY single member of my clan have been playing this since it came out, it really sounds addictive, although it's not my sort of thing so I'm not gonna buy it, but if you like a good RTS, get this game....my clan claim its the most addictive game sice bf2.

Yup the battles are very similar, but this has more economy and infrastructure management on top of the fighting

If it's already out I'll buy it tomorrow, but what I really want is Ascendancy 2.

Its only 3-dimensonal in the fact that the camera can take any angle you want, and all the ships are rendered in 3d.  However, your ship commands are limited to one plane, so no Homeworld style movement.

One flaw though

Once you play one game of it, thats pretty much it.  Game works alot like civilization series(although its all realtime) but basically theres no campaign or story, and every game boils down to the same thing.  Ships also mov equite slowly so games can take ages.

On the goodside
You can have hundreds of ships on screen and still run it great, the battles are very well animated, and the scope is HUGE.  8 hours into one game and I was still fighting off 6 of 8 races(reformated today and lost my save damnit).  Plently of units to go around, small rpg elements, and plently of action.

Its a fun game, but gets old quick.  If the game was a bit deeper, it might have held my intrest longer.

Game does really good, and I'm surprised it wasn't advertised and talked about more. Seems to have gone relatively unnoticed .

I've been looking for a new RTS for a few weeks now- after completing WiC I became bored with it, and never took much interest in C&C3. After trying games such as Dawn of War (oh dear...), I think I'll give this game a decent looksie.

Here's the important bit:

Are there plenty of fighters and bombers and the like that scurry around like flies about your large warships?

What's your problem with DoW? Everyone i know who has played the game thinks it's awesome, especially after Dark Crusade.

Otherwise, i just got this game yesterday. Haven't played it yet, but i have high hopes.

Pretty decent! Got an 88 from Metacritic, with an average of an 8.6 user review. Nice! I think I might pick this up.

Here's a link for an awesome price of it, on newegg.

Yes, fighter/bombers hover are literally represented as little specks unless you really zoom in to see them.  When you have a huge amount of carriers, the suckers can literally form clouds of color specks able to smash capital ships to pieces.

Eve Online. Interface and play style is a bit different, though; Eve's closer to X3 if anything. Eve comes with recommends from just about all my friends who've tried it, but I still hedge about monthly payments that could go into bolstering my collection instead.

Freelancer is probably the second-best online space shooter out there, and its 'mmo' servers are free and user-maintained.

The game has one of the most impressive UI's I've ever seen.
The camera controls are so well thought out that it still keeps amazing me.

On top of that, it's a very fun game to play.

I've played EVE before- it's a pretty good space MMORPG - but I find this 'Sins of a Solar Empire' more fun. There does seem to be a common theme running throughout both games of tedium and slowness, but I guess that's just space for you . In EVE it can take you weeks to even get off the ground, similarly just as this game could take you weeks to get stuck into a good epic-scale campaign... both of them are ultimately fun for hours and hours.

After completing all of the Tutorials I am impressed with this game, and will sit down for a concentrated few hours of space colonization later . Thanks for the recommendation- I'm going to be having some fun with this game over the next few weeks!

(P.S. My main complaint with DoW was its generic nature. It's not really drastically different from 99% of other RTS games out there- that and it is slightly more aged in comparison to newer titles... so it doesn't even stand out on a graphics/cinematic point of view either)

I was thinking about downloading it, but multiplayer wouldn't work. That's no fun.

Might buy it when the price drops.
