what we needa do is get the designs for the tavor from the isralis, and then mod for a larger round, its a sweet gun though
we need an assault rifle version of the 25MM Bushmaster Autocannon. Not just a sniper rifle.
Hopefully it will be a gun of the 6mm Caliber 5.56 sucks it will no pierce most objects that Insurgents might be suing for cover, but the 6mm would go through its basically a cross between 5.56 and 7.56
or
or
But maybe with a 40mm or Perhaps with a 120mm Auto cannon for the Heavy MG role to replace the M2 .50calGunSlinger OIF II wrote:

Yes, have an auto-firing tank gun replace a heavy machine gun.GR34 wrote:

Look at te Springfield, one of the best rifles out there, and it was used for decades, while new rifles came and passed, it was just that good. Age doesn't determine the quality. The 1911 has been one of the best handguns( at least in my opinon) for decades. While new stuff is great, you can't beat tried and true, and reliable weapons with decades of use and manufactering behind them. If we swapped out the entire armory every time someone changed something on a weapon that increased performence, the servicemen would never get a rifle, by the time it arrived, it would be replaced.steelie34 wrote:
yeah but it has statistical disadvantages. if no one pushed for newer and better, the kentucky long-rifle would still be fielded by snipers. im sure they all thought nothing was wrong with it, but someone has to keep improving it.GunSlinger OIF II wrote:

im just shocked that the US hasnt pushed for this faster. it seems like a lot of soldiers would like something bigger/better, and the brass is being so slow to act, which is so not typical of our norm of pushing new tech as fast as possible.
this is the 25MM sniper rifle

LOL with that gun if your lucky enough to get the enemy to all line up in front of you you can take 7 or 8 with a single shot.
But Yea mostly for engaging light vehicles or Infantry of 2km+ range I guess?
You never know, if the US navy manages to shrink those rail guns enough your troops may be running round with them, quake2 style

Keep searching for a better converter..that one didn't measure right. 5.56mm = .223 caliber.David.P wrote:

yeah they've looked at what happened in Iraq {pray and spray from the enemy from behind concrete walls } they would just stay behind the wall and stick the gun over or around the side and spray and the 5.56 wasn't having much effect but a 6.8 will give you COD4 effects
Just keep the AR weapon system but chamber it for 308. Give Noveske the contract and you'll have AK reliability and R700 power!!

Actually 5.56mm does = .223 caliber. Problem is, Military Full Metal Jackets fired in M-16 aren't the same as an AR-15, which by default shoots .223Remmington. The gas pressure is over 10% higher, so it is highly stressed not to use 5.56mm in a commercial AR-15. 5.56 puts out something like 60000 PSI = 4136.84 BAR! The .223 caliber puts out 50000 PSI = 3447.364 BAR at 500 FT Above Sea. Quite a difference after many rounds through the same barrel.IRONCHEF wrote:

I also agree there isn't any thing wrong with the M-16 rifles or their rounds. But I think we will come up with some thing that we will use in different situations. Prime example is OIF. Company Marines started fielding the M4. But some thing will eventually replace them. I like the idea of getting one of those AR style rifles with the .308 chamber

as far as I know, the US armed forces are using various versions of the H&K416 and 417 in iraq alrerady, although not for evaluation purposes.

I think if you combine the M16/M4/AR features with the H&K expertise, and maybe change to 7.62 ( interchageable barrels, etc ) you'll get a fantastic assault rifle.

We got rid of the M9 in the Coast Guard a couple years ago. Been carrying the Sig p229DAK in .40 SW. Great gun.

If everybody had flowers instead of bullets everybody would get on a whole lot better, don't you think?

Regular Aussie army uses locally made Steyr AUG (called an Austeyr) as well. Minimi as the squad LMG. SAS seem to use M4.Nappy wrote:

Any replacement for the M16 will have to use 5.56 or 7.62 to be compatible with other NATO forces. The whole point of using the same rounds was to ensure resupply was easy for joint groups. Course might not be so important now that there is no more Soviet bloc.
Any gun designed by a committee will be garbage. Get the grunts involved. When the M16A1 first came out it was garbage. Combat units in Nam went back to using their M1 Garands early on because the M16A1 kept jamming. This for a gun meant to be designed to be used in dirst and rain, and to be low maintenance.
Personally I want one of those Kris .45 SMGs I saw on Futureweapons, with the recoil soak up breech.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TDI_Kriss
And the AA-12 fully automatic shotgun. It can fire fully automatic shotgun shells up to 200 metres, and they have a slug that is a mini-grenade.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atchisson_Assault_Shotgun
But I am getting distracted from the Assault Rifle topic here.
Look that a weapon is "old" doesn't mean it's bad, sure the M16 etc have a little bit old design, but they're pretty much incredible. It's hard to find a really better replacement for good weapons, especially if you have to concentrate on certain stuff. As for now since we're fighting alot of insurgencies these days, small, compact and quick to use weapons are ideal for the urban areas. The m16 is imo pretty much a great rifle.
