I offered this lady to help her if she wanted, but she always refused the help. Her home is a mess, but she managed to rise her three children ok. Last week me and two friends were by her neighborhood, and we heard the woman screaming. The guy obviously was beating her. We knocked at her door, she opened it. We asked her if she needed any help, and she said she didn't. We left. What would you do in this situation? Would you help anyone that doesn't want your help? Would your help be appreciated? Could your help worsen things even more?

Our neighbors used to beat the shit out of each other, call the cops, storm out, break windows, and despite that, they got married...
In the few months they lived by us, the cops were sent over at least 6 times.

Call the cops. i'm not joking. you have a chance to be responsible here, so do it. You could possibly be saving - or at least highly improving - someone's life. If she refuses to cooperate with police and the problem persists, you've done all you can to help her.

In Ireland the usual for this situation is that all of the woman's brothers and uncles pick the guy up some night in a van, take him out to the mountains/forest and make it explicitly clear that for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction! During the troubles it was possible to imply IRA involvement (even if there was none), which is pretty scary but that shit doesn't fly anymore. Seriously, people of violence often only understand violence and there's no point waiting for the woman to ask for help as she is most likely too terrified. But what if I help her and then the husband kills her in retaliation? I wouldn't be helping her at all. We obviously could have taken the guy easily, but we respected the lady's wish to sort things out on her own.djphetal wrote:

The sad fact is the cops aren't gonna sit in the house and form a cordon between them whenever he loses his temper. The cops will probably turn up, she'll say everything is fine, he'll beat the living shite out of her for calling the cops (as far as he knows) and she'll end up resenting you for causing the whole situation.
