If you are so unsure about getting vista you will in a few years get a new option.. lol..

wiki wrote:

Windows 7 (formerly codenamed Blackcomb, then Vienna) is a future version of Microsoft Windows. It is expected to be the successor to Windows Vista. Microsoft has confirmed that the planned development time frame is at least two years, putting the release date around 2009. On July 20, 2007, Microsoft confirmed that Windows 7 is "the internal name for the next version of the Windows Client OS".

Microsoft has refrained from discussing the details about Windows 7 publicly as they focus on the release and marketing of the slow-to-be-adopted Windows Vista, though some early details of various core operating system features have emerged at developer conferences such as Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in 2006[citation needed].
Windows 7 will also include the same touch function as iPhone.

Things are moving faster than ever. Gone are the days when XP, the PS2 etc.. could last 5-6 years. Nowadays, Vista/PS3/X360 won't last nowhere near as long.

God dammit can't they make Vista good instead?! Just look at XP - it's lasted for six years, and is very stable and reliable. It also took a couple of years of development and was based on tested and trusted systems.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I also think they should work on Vista.. And when a new Windows OS the released they stop supporting older versions...

Considering that XP is just Windows 2000 + eXPansion pack, it's lasted a bit longer than 6 years.
Hah, by the same token, Vista is just NT 3.1 with an expansion pack. There's a lot more to an OS than just the kernel.

What I really want to see is a vastly improved Explorer. It cannot be that hard to make a decent shell. I want light snap-in applications for Explorer, like FTP clients where all you have to do to upload a file would be right click, expand an FTP menu, and select a preset location. I would really like to see simple, menu-based scripting for Explorer as well. Things like a simple regex matching feature to do mass operations on groups of files would be awesome. Especially if you could schedule it as a task.

Those two cannot be compared in that way. Why? Because Vista actually is a lot more than just a kernel. Vista is basically written from scratch.

XP is basically Win2000 extended for faster boot, better UI and multi-media. Remove the nice little blue XP shell, and you've basically got 2000. There's a reason for why bit has, since the start, stood "Windows XP/2000" on all software and drivers, since the start. If it was the same for Vista, there wouldn't be any fancy stickers saying "Vista compatible" on every three programs in the store shelves.

So.. you want a Unix variant?
decent shell, simple lightweight FTP command, regex commands usable from a shell script, task scheduling of shell scripts..
UNIX doesn't patent obvious practicality :> I just want Microsoft to implement it in their operating systems.

By Microsoft's own version numbering, Windows 2000 is Windows 5.0 and Windows XP is Windows 5.1.

Windows 2000 was a major architectural change from NT 4.0.
(directx functionality, hardware access, user interface, POSIX attempt, scripting, memory management, Win16-on-Win32, general programming interface layout and conceptualization.. etc)

Win2K to WinXP offered nothing as drastic.

Without going into a long technical illustration, Win2k to WinXP is about as much of a change as Win95 to Win98.
(Extending that analogy a bit further, then, it'd be [humorously] win2k->WinXP->Vista is akin to Win95->Win98->WinME)
Heh, the point is still that there are many more aspects to an OS than just the kernel. By far the majority of problems in any given OS exist as a consequence of how the UI and applications interact with the API, not as problems wholly within the kernel itself, and Windows XP was miles apart from Windows 2000 in that regard.

Drop the price to something reasonable.
Fuck off with all the bullshit graphics and gimics.
Delete all the ghost code.
Debug the fucking thing before release.
Economise it's resource use to next to nothing.
And I may consider actually buying my first actual copy of windows.

Until then Microsoft can bite my shiny metal arse.

They're also going back to basics with Windows 7, apparently the source code is 25MBs as opposed to Vista which is something like 4GBs.

I think it's pretty much gonna have the same interface as vista, it's more of a "Vista was a fuck up we know, instead of a load of service packs and patches here's a newer improved one, plus we get loadsa money for it" kinda thing. I don't know too much about it, I heard it was gonna be called viena, i prefer that name myself than "7".

Don't know why people rag on it...most people who do don't even have it.

Windows 7 should be interesting. 16 core processors by then probably, if not more. 32? And standard RAM will probably be up to DDR4, with 8 gigs being advised.

Windows 7 is the current code name for it. They said they will change it when it comes to release.

I don't "rag on it" been using for half a year or so now and haven't had any probs with it(Except having to run everything as admin, but that can be fixed in DOS easily), it likes its ram though, but that's so cheap nowadays it's not a big deal.

Milestone 1

The first known build of Windows 7 was identified as a "Milestone 1 (M1) code drop" according to TG Daily with a version number of 6.1.6519.1. It was sent to key Microsoft partners by January 2008 in both x86 and x64 versions.[11][12] Though not yet commented on by Microsoft, reviews and screenshots have been published by various sources.[13][14] The M1 code drop installation requires Windows Vista with Service Pack 1, and creates a dual-boot system with Windows Vista.[15]

On April 20, 2008, screenshots and videos of a second build of M1 were leaked with a version number of 6.1.6574.1. This build included improvements to Windows Explorer as well as a new Windows Health Center.[16]

So basicall, thats it.
