well we have lots of CCTV and it catches plenty of criminals and even caught the London bombers. What about the other 9 points?theelviscerator wrote:

Depends what sort of surveillance you're talking about.theelviscerator wrote:

Um, cam, Hitler was democratically elected. In one day he forced the reich to pass legislation eliminating the position of president and declaring himself fuhrer. It can't be that hard can it?CameronPoe wrote:
They are far far away from several of those 10 points - some of them are horribly accurate but a few are hyped and blown out of all proportion. I can't see how they could possibly take a jump from free elections to none at all - a necessary step towards a fascist dictatorship - unless of course you follow Nine Inch Nails' take on how it will occur (in the year 2024 I think NIN predict....).
I think people would notice if suddenly the entire Democratic delegation to Congress failed to show up for a vote giving Bush lifetime presidential powers. Besides, they couldn't do it without an amendment to the Constitutions, and the states would never do something like that.jonsimon wrote:

Do I think Bush is trying to do the same thing? No. Could he? Yes.

Doesn't everyone think "That could never happen to me" before it does?UGADawgs wrote:

Doesn't 999/1000 times someone thinks that it doesn't happen after all?jonsimon wrote:

Lets say there is a statistical probability of the event occuring. Suppose the event is happening to a nation and suppose nations are timeless. Suppose, also, that as time progresses more people think "That could never happen to us." Then, as time approaches infinity, the statistical probability of the event approaches 1, or 100%.Miller wrote:

That's very true, but look at how young the US is to other nations. There is a very small chance at this point in time. Not to say that it won't increase in time.jonsimon wrote:

In otherwords, statistically speaking, it doesn't matter if only 1/1000 times the even occurs, given time the liklihood increases.
We all are. Here in Germany politicians are discussing a law which would allow the "Verfassungsschutz" (Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution) the BND (Secret Service) and the Federal Police to spy out your computer secretly by a trojan. A trojan which no anti-virus publisher would be allowed to sell a countermeasure.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

When you pull one card from a house of cards it all falls.
BOOYA!
Cause using lots of CCTV in the street as a crime prevention measures is the same as wiretaping phones & reading emails to spy on the public isn't it? When the government puts CCTV at work or in my house to watch me you can get back to me.theelviscerator wrote:
