Sustainability is an attempt to provide the best outcomes for the human and natural environments both now and into the indefinite future. It relates to the continuity of economic, social, institutional and environmental aspects of human society, as well as the non-human environment. It is intended to be a means of configuring civilization and human activity so that society, its members and its economies are able to meet their needs and express their greatest potential in the present, while preserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems, and planning and acting for the ability to maintain these ideals in a very long term. Sustainability affects every level of organization, from the local neighborhood to the entire planet.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainability

A more sustainable city, or Eco-city, has fewer inputs (of energy, water, food etc) and fewer waste products (heat, air pollution, water pollution etc) than a less sustainable city. In this context, sustainability is a relative concept. One cannot say that one city is 'sustainable' and another city is 'non-sustainable' or 'unsustainable'. Cities can be made more sustainable by means of:

    * green roofs
    * green transport
    * sustainable urban drainage systems or SUDS
    * energy conservation
    * xeriscaping - garden and landscape design for water conservation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_city

How would you make your city a more sustainable one?

My friends and I are arguing about this. They say its about the ecosystems and biodiversity. I say its about energy conservation and urbanization.

Your thoughts please

I say you would have to take into account that civil engineers did NOT plan on millions of ILLEGAL aliens.

One reason why roads, sewers etc. are not meeting demand is because of the glut of these people.

My answer: I would demand the elected leader enforce our  existing laws and deport people.

How can you begin to discuss sustainability when you are not counting the real number of people in a enviroment?

Get people to turn off stuff they're not using.

Simple.

Effective.

Saves money.

You know, you always bring up the illegal thing, but you already said that your business hires them.  So, why are you complaining?  You're starting to sound like Rush Limbaugh when he was condemning drug abuse despite being an abuser himself (or when he condemned welfare despite spending some time on that as well).

A fair question.

I'm changing the nature of my business to hopefully allow me to not rely on hired help.
You just know whta it's like until you have tried to run a business in Southern California.

Dude, don't blame ME for the situation at the border. I been raging about this for years.

Well, I can definitely agree with you that the situation is bad.  I just honestly don't know if there's really much we can do other than go forth with something like that guest worker idea....

Many of the Mexicans I know are hurting bad. All of the construction trades are down and 95% of them do not have any sort of savings. I've had to turn many of them away, even though some I have known for 10+ years.

This will begin to make news soon as they will begin to go elsewhere looking for work in large numbers and evictions rise.

All's I heard was Metallica.

Edit: Sorry about the off-topic-ness of my post.

I would elect to recognize that no city can be perfect, that all humans have faults.  There will still be murder, stealing, drug abuse, alcoholics and countless other imperfections.  I would just try to create a more environmentally friendly city in which our CO2 emissions were fairly low and our electricity comsumption is close to half below the national average (wouldn't that be great?).  Thus, we could save money and spend it on more important things for the city...like building Sports Arenas!  Haha, kidding.

That is a good point.  On a greater scale, a lot of this comes down to wages.

One of the main arguments against raising the minimum wage involves how small business owners say that having to pay each of their workers more causes them to lay off some people.  Layoffs would be less common if business owners were ok with making smaller wages themselves.  Small business owners should have more tax breaks as well though.   Most tax breaks under this administration have gone to Bush's corporate friends.  The estate tax wasn't exactly a pressing issue for most small business owners.

This relates to illegal labor in a similar way -- if employers were more interested in the long run than the short run, they would hire legal citizens and pay them decent wages.  It may be cheaper to hire an illegal, but as you pointed out, on a collective level, more illegals eventually equals more poverty in this country -- which also means higher healthcare costs when these people get sick and can't pay their medical bills at the hospital.

Essentially, greed blinds a large portion of the business community so much that they are inadvertently destroying the financial future of their own country.  At this point, I'm starting to wonder if maybe that's how things should happen anyway, though....   America is most definitely past its prime, and it looks like the worship of the Almighty Dollar is coming to a close....

I guess the Almighty Euro is next....

I'd encourage methane harvesting/electricity generation from green, and brown waste.  The city council already does it to an extent but it isn't a full operation.

All that I can say is I start people @ 10-12 per hour: black, brown, legal or illegal.

Minimum wages laws effect food service businesses and landscaping cmpanies, temp agencies, etc. Not me.

That's good...  I guess another issue to address with Hispanic families in general is that they should have less kids, unless they can afford them.  Better family planning would definitely help them out in the savings department.

LOL... Yeah, I don't understand how such a widespread religion could still be so anti-birth control.

It definitely keeps their numbers high though....  maybe that was the idea....
