IMo 64 players is a little too much....I prefer to have empty area's in a map, it slows things down and allows for a more thought out approach.
say 30 something players on a 64 player map, that way you can always find some one to kill, but you can still be stealthy.

64. I've never even played on a 16 player server, only twice on a 32.

I prefer 56 - 64 players on 64 maps. More targets and potential kills
32 on 64.
32-40 on a 64 map. Enough to have teamwork, but not too few so you have to flag-hop.

I prefer 64 on 64 map. Works perfectly fine for me.
As many as you can fit on the server. I love a huge battle! The best fights are when the auto balance is off or fucked up and there are 5 or 6 more players on the opposing team, thats awesome! I seem to fight harder if I feel outnumbered.

I really don't like the higher population servers. I generally stick to 16-24 for infantry and 32 at most for air maps.
