Yknow, I was watch "The Boondock Saints" again last night, and I don't know why, but that quote in the very beginning of the movie really sat with me. For those of you who haven't seen the movie,
Others can only get away with doing evil in this world if we allow them to get away with it. Remember that.
I think this is something we take for granted in modern society. We SHOULD fear the indifference of good men. I think we LET evil run rampant in our society. Now, I'm not a huge fan of Rousseau, but I think that people have a good streak that underlies their nature. It may not be present in ALL people, but it certainly is present in most. And yet, here we stand by and WATCH as people in this world that would do evil are allowed to run rampant and free. All we can do is sit back and make excuses to "justify" their behavior and thus allow us to take the easy way out. We the people, however, have the power in this world. No one else. Others only have power if we LET them have power. The Boondock Saints wrote:
And I am reminded, on this holy day, of the sad story of Kitty Genovese. As you all may remember, a long time ago, almost thirty years ago, this poor soul cried out for help time and time again, but no person answered her calls. Though many saw, no one so much as called the police. They all just watched as Kitty was being stabbed to death in broad daylight. They watched as her assailant walked away. Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men.
Others can only get away with doing evil in this world if we allow them to get away with it. Remember that.
