The most effective defence is not giving a flying fuck and getting on with life. London learnt that lesson through extensive terrorism campaigns over the last century or so. From anarchists to Nazi's to the IRA to skinheads to Al Qaeda, most people in London and in England generally have pretty much learnt that just holding up your head and refusing to be terrorised if the only way to defeat the problem. The scaremongering and constant lamentation made fashionable by the American media since 9/11 does just one thing: It gives the terrorists exactly what they want. It's a shame that the attitude I remember to terrorism when growing up may be lost in the newer generations, but eventually when all else fails perhaps the lessons will be learned again. Stiff upper lip, lads!rawls2 wrote:

Seriously your lack of knowledge shines through again. Im sorry but i just plain dont believe you work in this area. The maintence loan is capped at parents earning 30k a year. You only get the full 3200 if your parents earn less than about 15k i think.UON wrote:
I agree. However as a former employee of an university, and a current employee of a company with very close ties to both the major universitys in my local area, I feel obliged to clear up a few misleading statements which might put people off attending university in the UK:
I worked as tech support/development for my uni as my 52 week placement during the period when top-up fees were introduced, I was actually expected to know about the new system as part of my job, so as to be able to direct people to the correct place/website when they turned up at the tech support desk with stupid question about why they haven't got any cash yet (trust me, they did). You now get around a £3200 maintence loan and a £3000 fee loan from the SLC, which is capped to inflation. I stopped working as tech support when I graduated 6 months ago, so I really doubt much has changed. And the standard teaching calendar at almost every uni in the UK is 26-28 weeks, once you deduct the holidays from the 40 week academic year. There may be a few more exam weeks depending on course. If you have coursework to do during the holidays, then you haven't managed your time well, the 35-38 hour week is designed to include the coursework. The teaching weeks are almost always spread over 2 semesters. You don't need to borrow privately on the scale Vilham indicated, with a little effort you can finish with little more than the standard student debt and also have a good time. Anyway, don't be put off, it's hard work if you do it right, but it's worth it. Don't think you need to keep up just because some people borrow far beyond their means. There are a few on every course, and in my personal experience they don't last it out to the very end.
Don't be put off by anything anyone says.

You don't have a clue how much coursework i have to do, i have alot. I would love you to say that to an architect, because they would knock your block off for talking shit, they have to work nearly every hour or every waking moment.
Please explain where I will get the money to pay for my 4-5k accommodation, 3k teaching fees, and all my living expenses, seeing as the max i can borrow from SLC is 3k, do i just magic it into the air?
Basically my conclusion is you know little to nothing about being a current uni student.
NO i was offended by the fact you have clearly stated that the UK hasn't been hit hard enough. You clearly infer that the terrorist atrocities of July 7 wasn't up to your oh so spectacular expectations. You have clearly stated that British deaths at the hand of extremists wasn't good enough for you. I would even go as far as to state you believe American lives > all other humans. If you're not a Yankee then you're an Untermensch right? Especially applicable to all Iraqis and people from the ME, terrorist or not.rawls2 wrote:

I've never condoned ANY terrorist activity, so diddums where did you pick up that little delusional rant? They are criminals simple and its a matter for the law. See that was easy wasn't it? My problem is you fuckheads are so detached from reality you seem to think you have a innate understanding of terrorist activity within the British Isles, which you would love to be drummed up to be some dirty bomb gangbang scare mongering bollocks of which is the norm for you. YOU don't live here, YOU don't know shit.
Oh im saddened you weren't on...wait I'm not gonna sink to your depths. Have a great evening.

Wrong. The £3,200 is the non-income assessed portion.Vilham wrote:

Half of term 3 is not teaching time. And anyway, that's not the 40 weeks you claimed. There are two 12 week semesters at most of the universities. Check the websites if you don't believe me.Vilham wrote:

I know several architecture students. It's obviously dependent on your education background and motivation as to how difficult you find the assessment, but those courses last far longer than standard degrees, and quite rightfully involve similar levels of control and competency to medical degrees. If you enter that profession then peoples lives are quite literally in your hands. And incidentally, one of the girls I knew on an architecture degree also worked 20 hours in a bar every week to pay her overseas student fees.Vilham wrote:

My conclusion is that you don't know your entitlements, and you haven't learned enough about banks to realise that getting that kind of credit is not easy. Where do you get the money? You are supposed to work every available moment or have rich parents.Vilham wrote:

Try the loan entitlement calculator if you don't believe me. Here I've pretended to be a regular undergraduate student who does not wish to be income assessed (e.g. it assumes I am from a wealthy background):

Try it yourself: http://www.studentsupportdirect.co.uk
The actual amount is higher if you are from a low income background. Those figures is what every student can claim, per year. The student will only see the top figure, the uni will get the bottom one. You don't pay fees up front any more unless you choose to. You know not of what you speak. I suspect you may not actually be even be claiming a student loan, as you would know all this.
edit: Just so you know what you'd get if you weren't from a priviliged background, here's one where the family earns less than £15000:
http://img234.imageshack.us/my.php?image=poorlt3.jpg
An additional non-repayable £2,800 is available.
edit: Now please please drop it.

By stating that you do not feel the same urgency as we do about terror in no way diminishes what happened on your soil. Where did you get that? I'll i'm pointing out is if the terror attacks had killed more you'd feel different. You sir have a mighty chip on your shoulder.

Once you have read them i would ask why you are aggressively telling us to catch the type of people our country are already building cases against and arresting.
Please explain what more should we do? Kill them? oh wait that would make them a martyr
And if you say sort immigration then i hope your country leads by example and shows us how it's done.

You can say that all you like, it doesnt change the fact that you are naive to think that just because the winning side writes history it makes anything they do right. I asked where in the world, ( other than Osama Bin Laden Elementary ) is history being taught that the US is a terrorist state and that the attack on Japan was a terrorist act.
I acknowledge that history is written by the winners. What is it that is taught in Germany and Japan about the bombings, is it that it was terror attack or not??
Why wouldn't they "like" the history books? It tells the truth, doesn't it? More than a few supposedly US History books start out talking about population of the continent thousands of years before the 'States were founded and the colonization preceding as well. I've yet to see one endorsing any action, but only providing information objectively. By this logic saying the Indians wouldn't like it, you could say that slaves wouldn't like it either but it's true. The books show the ideology of people at the time and their ideas about race; you have the mindset of manifest destiny that helped get the western states. It's history, not a novel.topal63 wrote:
