A person can only tolerate so much with an "open mind" until it becomes apparent that it is nonsense. A video made on the sole opinion of this person cannot be taken as a serious study of the Marine Corps.

I never said you were supposed to take it as a serious study! I'm saying don't just excuse it as bullshit because it's not. Instead of ignoring it, learn from it, he does make several good points that todays society either cannot recognize or chooses to ignore..
Same here. If he thinks Marines are losers perhaps he'd like to engage in some hand to hand combat to prove himself? Since we humans are by nature individuals who like to do what we want, a new recruit has to be trained to follow orders. Some label that "brainwashing" - I call it common sense. If someone volunteers to be a Marine, the Marines have the right to teach him how they see fit. And as you said, it's for survival.TuataraDude wrote:
I'm sorry, but the moment he said the USMC recruits "all the losers, dead enders and other types of scum from the bottom of the barrell" he lost any chance of convincing me he was going to say something intelligent.
About the brainwashing, to a certain extent, this is true. Drilling to get people used to reacting without thinking is not because they want control, it is to increase their chances of survival.
It is rather ironic, because those people he is calling morons died to protect his right to say this tripe.
All of these "good" points can be excused as opinion.CommieChipmunk wrote:

I wouldn't go as far as brain washing, but people do get de-sensitised but its so they can do they damm job. A marine who runs around giving hugs to the enemy ain't of much used to anyone are they?

I could get angry and make a reference to the last couple posts about the declining quality of debate among these forums, but it's on the internet so I guess I can't expect much from it.
EDIT: no, that is not what I'm saying. I'm saying watch the video with an open mind and realize that in essence they are brainwashed and in general suffer from intense PTSD when they get home. From the veterans I've talked to, I highly doubt that our good old friend usmarine did any killing wherever he toured, if he did in fact tour. When we have Vietnam vets come in we have to warn them before the bell sounds so they don't have a flashback and freak out. There is no way in hell they could play a video game like BF2 because once they get home many actually come to terms with the fact that they took the life of another human being. Don't believe me? Look up the stats, more Vietnam vets died by suicide than by enemy fire.. hmm whys that?
anyway... have fun folks

Good points... I don't really know how to avoid that aspect of society, but the more cynical part of me feels that it is inevitable.CommieChipmunk wrote:

Admittedly, I only got about halfway through.... You should know by now though that I am typically an anti-government voice here. I just don't like people like this narrator, because he gives anti-establishment movements a bad name. It's kind of like how Libertarianism has a lot of good ideas, but the party is often weighed down by nutcases. This guy sounds like a typical conspiracy theorist who lacks in facts and direction.
Still, I agree with a very small amount of what he's said. Most of my distrust concerning Iraq is not aimed at soldiers, however. I just distrust the defense contractors. Soldiers are trained to serve our society -- corporations are trained to make a buck regardless of the costs to society.
Though I think that this so called "brainwashing" begins at a very early age. I have a kid in one of my classes whose mom is in Iraq and the other day he was telling us about how his mom just sent him a picture of her in some helicopter helmet smiling and he put it up on his myspace account with a caption titled "when my mom kills, she smiles". And that's the kind of sick stuff that doesn't come naturally. Personally I think it is a symptom of media domination, most people don't really think for themselves anymore, but I guess it's necessary in order to keep the masses controlled and "well educated" on current events.
What I'm about to say is a generalization of only some of the soldiers out there, but before I'm flamed to death, I'll reiterate that it also applies to people in general.
There are a lot of people out there that are easily manipulated. There's a reason why the average human IQ is between 90 and 100, despite how many people are well above that range. In order to average things out, quite a few people have an IQ closer to 85 as well. Whatever the case, without a proper education and an innate desire to think independently, some people really do fit what that guy was talking about.
It's just that he makes the mistake of generalizing all Marines this way. I'm sure there are a few Gomer Pyles in the Corps that mean well but have never been the sharpest knives in the drawer. In many cases, it's not really relevant to their job performance though. All of the branches of the military are complicated in their purposes, and the Marines is far from being a monolithic institution. This diversity of talent and aptitude is what helps it function properly. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to fill the role of the average soldier. That being said, I doubt many rocket scientists would have the physical fortitude or willpower necessary to be a soldier. On the other hand, you usually have to be pretty bright to fill some of the more complicated and technical positions in the armed forces.
Since some people are likely to be manipulated one way or another, I'd rather they be directed at something usually productive (like the Marines) rather than say... working in a call center or entering "thug" culture.
This is basically an acknowledgment of Nietzsche's Untermenschen and Ubermenschen ideas. Some people are meant to lead, but most are meant to follow. This generally makes a soldier an Untermensch (a follower) and an officer an Ubermensch (a leader). Yet, the follower is just as important as the leader, because without a large group of loyal followers, you're going to have a weak defense force.
So... without too much more blabbering, it's a good thing that some people are more cooperative and trusting than others.

Why doesn't he complete the so called easy training course and quit? God I hate this guy so disrespectful and does he actually have any proof of the stuff his saying.

I spent 7 years in the Marine Corps so I am pretty sure I have an extensive background on that particular subject. Again, people who have not be in the Corps just assume people are "brainwashed" because they believe what they see in movies.CommieChipmunk wrote:

Having been in the Marine Corps actually invalidates your opinion on the subject. Having been exposed to alleged psychological 'brainwashing' your opinion is circumspect and near-worthless on the topic. Now, if you were a psychologist who had done a study on the subject, you might be worth listening to. But you are not, and neither is the person in the video, so you have more things in common than you thought.killer21 wrote:

How does not having experience within the Marines give the guy who made it a valid view of the subject? A Marine can more effectively evaluate the demographics of idiocy in his/her own experience, too. A psychologist who does a study on that matter should be shot anyway for thinking there can be any correlation between stupid people and joining the military; for that matter, you could do the same thing on brain surgeons/rocket scientists.
I watched the video, and I'm ashamed I watched it. While he does have every right to say what he said that doesn't mean I have to agree with him at all, I don't even have to keep an open mind. He lost me at about 30 seconds in. Such disrespect is just inexcusable in my opinion. I don't know this guy at all but I would like to apologize on his part to everyone who has ever served in the military, and of course those who are on active duty now. The only reason I'm apologizing for the dimwit is because I know that he will never do it and I felt someone had to.
