It's 'Factor' vs. actor: O'Reilly faces Colbert

By RICHARD HUFF
DAILY NEWS TV EDITOR

Tonight, Colbert, who stars in Comedy Central's "Colbert Report," a show he's said was modeled after O'Reilly's, will appear on the Fox News Channel's "O'Reilly Factor" at 8 p.m. And at 11:30 p.m., O'Reilly will appear on "The Colbert Report."

"Borat had nothing to do with me," O'Reilly said yesterday, explaining why he said no to Cohen's fake newsman and yes to Colbert. "[Colbert] has made a career out of lampooning me."

Colbert will tape his interview - presumably in character - with O'Reilly around 6 p.m. tonight and O'Reilly will tape Colbert's show afterward.

"I expect he'll be in the Borat mode," O'Reilly said of Colbert. "I hope he'll answer some questions. A guy like Colbert can play it anyway he can play it."

The idea of the interviews came up about two months ago, according to O'Reilly, when he was approached to go on the Comedy Central show.

"I said yes, but he needs to come on my show," O'Reilly said.

O'Reilly admitted Colbert will have an upper hand of sorts, having done the Fox News show before sitting down at Comedy Central.

Colbert will get about eight minutes on Fox, and then O'Reilly will call in his analysts Bernard Goldberg and Jane Hall.

So what does he expect out of Colbert?

"Look, with a bunch of interviews, you don't know how they're going to go. That's part of the fun," O'Reilly said.

Ultimately, both shows win, O'Reilly said.

"It will be fun," O'Reilly said. "It's a good promotional opportunity for both programs."

They'll also be able to reach audiences that may not normally watch their shows.

"I know a lot of people who hate the Fox News Channel and never watch," O'Reilly said.

He's also cool with Colbert using him for inspiration.

"I think it's fine," O'Reilly said. "I'm a prominent person in the media. I think satire is very, very entertaining for any society to have. I have never had a problem with it as long as it's not mean-spirited, and I don't think he is."

Looks great, I really want to watch it. Especially on the Report, with "Papa Bear" coming.

I think it's gonna be a great show. I was watching the Repor' last night, and found out he was having 'Papa Bear' on his show, but didn't know it would be vise versa :p  Heres a question though, if Colbert hates bears so much, then why does he call O'reilly 'Papa Bear'?

Its part of the satire of the show. He says bears are evil godless killing machines and a threat to America. By calling O'Reily "papa-bear" he says O'Riely and people like him are the biggest threat to America. It is not that hard to figure out. In any event I will be TiVoing the episode (report) so I don't miss it.

I tuned in for a few minutes on the O'Reilly version since I was switching back between yesterday's Report (ree-poor) and it was terrible. There was about 1 person in the audience who laughed so weird. It's a very different experience with Stephen cracking wise most of the time.

Very tame, would've liked to see them discuss some real issues. Loved the bit at the end though 'people criticize what you say but they never give you credit for how loud you say it!'

Kmarion, what do you make of all this anti-French rhetoric? One of my best friends who works as a bartender in New York reckons people don't buy French drinks anymore and if anyone asks for one people at the bar usually gang up on them (verbally not physically)!

PS. O'Reilly is a disgrace to Ireland.

I've heard the jokes all my life. I have never experienced anything serious though. There was a anti-French period prior to the invasion when they would not support the US. People were boycotting "French's" mustard, which is a product of the USA. It just goes to show how ridiculous people can be. I am an American first and foremost of course.
