A news story on the radio sparked an interesting thought.  Supposedly there’s a push to require calorie statements on restaurant menus along with a “warning” for trans fats (oh noes!).  That got me thinking about the cigarette thread here in D&ST.  First, the government required warnings on cigarette packaging.  Now many cities and states are banning cigarettes from public places and even restaurants and some bars (huh? Isn’t that where people go to smoke?) are, too.  If the warning on menus become reality, do you think that restaurants will start deciding what we can order based on their evaluation of our health?

Me:  “I’ll take the 12 ounce sirloin with baked potato and a side of chili.”
Waiter:  “Sorry, sir.  You’ll have to select a salad if you wish to have the potato with your meal.  You cannot have the larger steak, the potato and the chili together.”

Will it happen?

They are already trying to ban trans fats where I live.

Interesting, but I disagree.  The ban on smoking in public places has little to do with individual health choices, and more to do with consideration of others in those public places.  With the smoking ban, I can now go to a bowling alley and not leave smelling like an ash tray.

Nah, the restaurants won't tell you what to eat. They only really care that you come in and spend money.

What if the government sticks its nose in and mandates health and takes away choice?  I think it's in Madison, WI they're trying to get a ban started on trans fats.

Our schools are thinking of going statewide and adding BMI on the report cards of all students.  This is being pushed by an overweight democrat by the name of Patricia VanDeputte.  Ironic if you ask me.

Wow, that'll help the self esteem.

"Johnny, you failed math and your BMI is off the charts - what a porker!"

or

"Johnny, you barely have a BMI, you need to bulk up small fry!"

I wonder how much taxpayer money will be sucked into evaluating all the kids.

I wish they would be required to put the nutritional labels just like at the store.

Restricting some types of fats/oils is a good thing, but calories on menus?  If you can't work out whether a food is bad for you or not you deserve to get fat.

Pubic's Patties
- 500g minced lean meat (I usually use beef)
- 1 finely chopped onion
- 1 egg
- some breadcrumbs
Extras:
- oregano
- a pinch of paprika
- half a handful of sundried tomatos, chopped

1)Mix the meat, oregano and sundried tomatos in a bowl.  Cover and set aside for a while.  Have a few beers in the meantime.
2)Throw the onion and egg (not the shell ) in and mix around.  Have another beer.
3)Make a patty and check the consistency to make sure it won't break apart when you cook it.  If it looks like it will then put it back in the mixture, mix in some breadcrumbs and make another patty.  Keep doing this until they're right.  Have another beer.
4)Cook the patties however you want and serve.  I recommend cooking them on the BBQ while drinking a beer and serving inside grilled burger buns with whatever other fillings you want, along with another beer.

Variations:
Lamb mince, replace the extras with fresh, chopped rosemary.  A nice cold draught goes well with this one.
Chicken mince, replace the extras with thai green curry paste, OR tandoori spices depending on whether you're after a Thai or Indian flavour.  Drink with a coldcoldcold lager.  'nuff said.

They do, but it's just an excuse for them that they care.
Fact is, they don't. You should know that by now .

Potato(without sourcream, butter, or bacon) is actually healthier and more nutrient rich than the salad(Assuming that the salad does have dressing on it).
