Dangling between the legs, that would be a clock.
So many jokes, so little time. Such an amusing line, though.

However, this is proof of concept for something I came up with a coupla years back for a forum RP; ceramic and plastic low-profile armour.

Looks cool, and would be awsome if it worked ane was practical.  After reading the article I get the feeling that some of the specs may have been a bit exaggerated though....

Baby steps people, this guy is a pioneer. You guys put it down like it would never work, it's in the concept stages right now.

Sad part is that it won't get used. Not only because the U.S. military usually makes their own stuff, so he would have had a tough time anyway, but also because in the current state of affairs I don't think that budget is going to get approved .

After this suit is tested by placing it before a claymore, followed by hitting it with shrapnel from an IED will I be convinced.

Will the suit's internal structure be permanently damaged?  At the current rate of spending, a new suit for everyone after they sustain fire will decrease deaths, but further the spending by the US government on wars.

PS.  The hands are a major part of a Soldier's body.  If they get blown off, then whether the soldier is still alive, functionally, is very insignificant to whether or not he can then defend himself.

Huh? Have you guys seen the bear suit he made in his garage in Canada that he got famous from, and probably most of the funding for this project?

This goofy foam and mesh BS may have worked for fending off bear attacks, but I think it is a giant leap to making military grade products to use in a live warzone....

For anyone who was curious about the movie cover they show at the beginning of that google video link, Quentin Tarantino didn't work on the movie, but they did actually make a movie out of this story....

What about Camo?!  If some soldiers did walk down a street wearing those, they'd be shining like mirrors for miles.

*soldier*:  ...
*sniper*:  Hey, shiny!  Guys, look at this!
(Hail of gunfire)
*soldier*:  shit!  I can't get up, cause this suit weighs me down!
*sniper*:  (Laughing)
*soldier*:  Sniper!  (targets with laser pointer)
*sniper*:  (sees red dot, takes out the soldier)
...etc.

I see lots of new problems ahead...

Gah, that's the BASE model. They could even create lighter/heavier variants of this. Plus, who said no to camo versions?

hmm Its is a very noisy suit, and vision may be impared, even if very slightly. So I would worry about those to things. But still in development those can be overcomed.

About vision...Is the head attached, or free?  If the head can move freely, a well-placed bullet to the head would create concussion, and a high-powered one could potentially break the neck or cause brain damage.

If they did use it, it would probably only be during high-risk missions.  I can actually see them using it with SWAT teams.

Perhaps a shotgun blast would rip off the head altogether.  I don't know.

EDIT:  the guy forgot about a silly string dispenser to clear out booby-trapped doorways.

Nice idea, very unrealistic. It would be a mountain to overcome the problems that would come with it, the cumbersomeness, the added weight, the heat it generate on the body in the sun, just to name a few. A soldier definately has enough to carry with the basic combat load and some extra ammo alone, I really don't see the reason to have them carry a A/C unit as part of their gear. Some soldiers already take off some of their body armor because some of these reasons already. Asking them to wear a full body suit with a full helmet is asking quite much IMO. It would be like asking them to get in MOPP 4 24/7. Impractical and unrealistic. Period.

I'd like to see the guy run in it with the helmet on. Bet he doesn't make it 50m before falling on his face. How about some basic infantry movements. Let's see him do 3-5 sec rushes, going prone and then getting back up, Let's see him throw a grenade. How much of your vision does the helmet cutoff?

The bear guy's helmet looks like it restricts vision a bit too much, though I do like the fans.

Looks a little bulky. Also, all the joints are exposed so there is nothing stopping your limbs from coming off. The helmet isn't connected to the suit so guess what your head is going to do in a major explosion.

The guy did not think a lot of things through completely.  When someone is under fire from a sniper, they want to not be seen, but with the laser they would.

Dragon Skin seems more effective, but it does not cover the entire body.
