I don't think point A to point B scripting is bad if it's still fun. Mario Bros. is the best story. The original with platforms and the level doesn't move.

Pre 2000 for me is Unreal and Duke3d. Unreal was amazing, even though I could barely play it on my P166, ok'd to 200.PBAsydney wrote:
You guys are totally neglecting the old games, where fancy graphics weren't enough to make a game that sells, computers were so crap that the programming had to be top notch, etc.
I'm talking about the pre-2000 ID games! Quake 2 ftw!

Half-Life (1998) a revolution in shooters; storyline, graphics and gameplay.
To me it will always be the best shooter, coz it defined fps games(well doom was there but hl was perfect)
damn headcrabs in dark tunnels

Yep, it was, but not the graphics were a revolution, but still up in the top.Abstinuous wrote:

It's good but super mario is better.
Yeah I'd never played a game with so much tension as half life 1, i jumped out of my skin quite a few times. I think the only game to approach it in atmosphere is F.E.A.RAbstinuous wrote:

That game was way ahead of its time.crimson_grunt wrote:

i remember soon after i beat hl1, my rich poof friend has just bought a 5.1 surround system for his pc and I went there and played the game. his parents were away for the weekend so the volume was maxed all lights in the rooms were turned off. and i swear that head crab took 10 yrs of my life.
even tho its a SP thread but the multi player for hl1 was the shniz, i still remember the sunrise when i was lanning with my friends on it

HL2 is good but... Dark Messiah for the win!
A lot of RPG's are admittedly better in terms of open-ness and storyline.
But for non-RPG (sorta) I'd have to say...
You can't argue that this game is linear.
Funny story really, I had a giant nostalgia burst and finished the campaign a couple days ago.
And the MP is pretty damn kickass too. Low system requirements, great graphics for its time, and low internet connection requirements.

2 pages, with no flaming, and healthy 'debate' this is going well!

I still think hl2 takes the crown though!

Come on Guys ...DOOM has to be better its the original that started the FPS genre... (well castle wolfenstein was but doom commercialised it)
BUT I'm talking about now.....if you had 2 pc's next to eachother....one with doom, one with hl2 both on full graphics....joker3327 wrote:

Which would you have fun playing more?
HL2 definetly is the best SP FPS up to date, I dont think there will be another FPS that can come close unleas they come out with some new technology that will change gameplay
prey was pretty good too, I heard they are working on prey 2, cant wait to see what theyll do for that one, first one was crazy, not to mention that its been in making since 1996, theres a video somewhere on net that showes prey on its original engine, looks like original HL
graphics mean nothing, Im not expecting much from crysis, just jaw dropping graphics and physics but that doesnt make the gameplay alot more fun

In the later part of PREY some of the levels were stunning. It was unbelievable to shoot an enemy and watch the body fall out in to space but then be pulled in to a different gravitation pull. The scale of some areas and the mini planets were beyond belief. Prey 2 is definitely on my must buy list.[AH1z]PJ wrote:

FEAR > HL2

FEAR kept the adrenaline running more than what hl2 did

FEAR just did more for me
coz it makes you jump at some points
the AI, all to be desired

FEAR only had good AI and good bullet time effect lol, the rest was boring, all levels looked the same, its like you were trapped in a big office or something
It'd be on my list, but I wanted it to have regular weapons, not bioweapons. Bang bang, not splat splat.crimson_grunt wrote:

Agreed. Gameplay first, pretty graphics second.[AH1z]PJ wrote:

True, variety of locations would make it much better. However, that would require Crysis like power to pull off the same level of detail when bullets shatter walls and glass and apply that to trees, leaves etc. They hit a home run by making the game like a movie using the music to build suspense. How about some action outside in a forest or jungle? THAT would be awesome combined with the enemies in the game.[AH1z]PJ wrote:
