I cannot freaking believe you left out people like Eric Clapton, Neil Young, and David Gilmour... this poll is very biased.

he mostly plays the bass guitar but tom jenkinson (aka "squarepusher") is just the sickest songwriter. he makes crazy electronica with insane bass solos and rhythms. after a century, normal blues derived rock music is kind of getting boring if u ask me. Even modern metal tends to conjure images to me that must be 20 years old at least.

check out "tetra-sync," "my sound," "theme from sprite," or "plotinus" if u are curious. i know this isnt dead on topic being that this is a guitar post, but ive played the guitar my entire life and i personally find styles like squarepusher's to be inspiring in the way they extend the life of the guitar. squarepusher does a really great job incorporating the sounds of our favorite instrument with a different musical movement. his music is made from recordings of his live drumming, bass, and guitar playing, and gratuitous use of various samplers and synthesizers.

neil young and gilmour aren't good guitarists.
they may make good music... well actually gilmour isn't impressive at all.
but yeah, eric clapton should definitely be up there.

I beg to differ! They are great guitarists.

For me Gilmour is my number one...And not just because I play his music myself...He simply is not a shredder like a lot of today's guitarists. He puts soul into his playing and has been trendsetting for ages. I mostly like his work on Animals and Meddle...but the rest is awesome too.

Close seconds would be Eric Johnson, Albert King, SRV, Hendrix....and a lot of other great players.
