Hugo Chavez has been re-elected as leader of Venezuela to continue the fight against the gigantonormous gap in wealth between the poor downtrodden and the rich elite in his troubled nation. Discuss.

Half my family live there and they hate him like most of the country, he only gives money to his supporters and theres still corruption there despite him being in power for 8 years. Now hes in power again for god knows how long as in 2010 hes holding a referendum on the constitiution and we all know hes gonna get support for that.

I have yet to figure out what you meant by that.. If you are referring to economic growth, I'd say Venezuela has everything pretty much in place due to 1/3 of GDP being from petroleum exports, and isn't doing so bad in the coffee-business, either.

Chavez wants to fight the gap between social classes, and the people have acknowledged that. It is difficult to believe that a country which has all the tools needed to be a welfare country, has an infant mortality rate of 21.54 deaths per 1000 births (almost 8x e.g. Sweden) and 17% of the population suffer from malnutrition. Approximately 5 000 000 people live without access to drinking water. And we're talking of a founding member of OPEC.

It remains to be seen if Chavez is full of hot air, a corrupt son of a bitch, or actually a leader that deserves to be yet again re-elected.

Most of the country? LOL. Less than 40% represents a minority, in case you haven't heard.

Get over yourself - you're obviously from the do-nothing landed classes of Venezuelan society, getting rich off the misery of others. I've been to Latin America several times and it's patently obvious how the system works over there - perpetuation of the gap between rich and poor.

I like that article, standing on a balcony and a addressing a political group is reminiscent of the Three Stooges episode in Moronica that spoofs Hitlers speeches.

On that note:

Is Venezuela a 3rd world country, or just a prime example of what excessive capitalism can cause? The country has all the tools to be a welfare nation, but isn't distributing funds in a way for this to be achieved, aka more to the people. If Chavez's master plan involves this redistribution of funds so that  the country can get a functional social system going, then more power to him!

You have the pushers and the addicts. The addicts are country's that buy oil and the pushers are the country's that sell oil. Venezuela is a pusher. At the current situation our dear Chavez is investing... but not in his people he is in making more oil. Now apart from the fact that he is even doing this economic 'bad' his country (and other pushers also) are getting addicted to the high selling price of theyre oil. When the moment comes that both (pusher and addict) need to "kick off" - use a new energy source.... it's like what i said - his country will make in the end only potato chips and not microchips.

To be perfectly honest, my parents friends that are from that country pretty much don't like what he is doing, but is that reason for me to hate him?  They tell me he is aliened with Castro, but is that a reason for me to hate him? He calls my president a devil, hell i just think that's funny, but again is that reason to hate him? My father visits the country and can't leave the hotel due to fear of being harmed in some way, but is that a reason for ME to hate him?

To be perfectly honest i'm not really sure, but by the looks of it some portion of the population doesn't agree with what he is doing, i haven't looked at the election results i'm sure it would be interesting to see how much of what demographic actually voted for him.
