I've played the original a bit. Everyone has 100% accurate insta-kill rifles.

Steep learning curve, but a really good game. DoD 1.3 was a classic, and DoD: Source definitely had many hours of fun for me.
Many would argue that the 'game is dead'... but that's just a generic statement made because the professional clan scene has matured and started to decline a bit. Still 1000's of public servers, and generally a solid purchase if you've got the cash free and handy for it.

It's a hell of a lot of fun. I played Source when it came out (at a friend's) and played both free weekends. I recently bought it just before the christmas steam sale for just $10. I really don't regret it. The guns are a lot of fun to use like the Kar or M1 Garand. It's not just a run and gun, no brainer like Counter-Strike, people actually do the objective. Imagine a compromise between Counter-Strike and BF2 but set in WWII and you've got the idea.
I also have DoD 1.3. I don't really play these days but back in its day, it was really something.

I play it from time to time and love it (I've played about 3-4 hours this past week) ... and, yes, steep learning curve with lots of 1-shot kills possible ... I'm still trying to figure out how to play it.
I found it quite easy to get to grips with. Unlike a lot of other games; you just can't run out with a machine gun and be Rambo himself - there's recoil to account for, and if you are a sniper; you must account for how much breath your character has.

I was playing that about 3 days ago, mowed through about four defenders (unusual for me) and got to one of the objectives only to discover that I had failed to pick up a TNT.
It's 10 bucks and it's addictive as hell. And it's a WWII game. What's not to love?
Played it for the first time today.. I thought it was horrible and don't see how people like it.
I played the free weekend when it was new, short learning curve, much like Call of Duty 2 but alot better thanks to the Source Engine, and awesome deployment/world interaction (deploying MGs and such which are bugger in other games)...
Never bothered to buy it because it came out when WWII was getting old...

I got it with my CSS disc ages ago. Much more fun than CSS imo, however I uninstalled the game due to no-one else playing (and my new PC)... if you get it, I'll have someone to play with

I got it free because the Orange Box didn't come out in time to come free with my graphics card.

And yes imagine a WWII counter-strike with more mature players mixed in with a bit'o'BF2.
Though to be deadly honest I mucho prefero Red Orchestra as it is far more realistic and tactical. DoD:S is great if you want half arcade and half realism.

DoDS sniping is the best.
But yeah, the game is worth it.
