I said it to my girlfriend before we started dating, but it was kind of a joke.

I don't tell her I love her, because I'm not sure if I do. I care about her and I love being with her, but we've only been together for about 7 months, so...

Of course there are real feelings - if there wasn't she wouldn't be my girlfriend. I'm just not quite sure if I love her YET, and I'm not the type of person to say it back to her simply because she says it. She understands.

I agree. I'd only say it if a person really means it. Those who say "I tell my gf it everyday" guess what? It doesn't mean ANYTHING to her when you do that. Stop it now. Say it when she does something truly meaningful for/to you. You're wasting the meaning of the phrase when you say it everyday. Grow up and smarten up.

That's how my relationship started - it was a friend of a girl my buddy used to screw, and I wanted to screw her - that's why I used to tell her I loved her in a joking manner. It got to the point where I even told her I wanted to fuck her (not a good pick up line by the way) before I really even knew her, but she gave me nothing. Once I started to get to know her, I found out she was cool as hell and I liked spending time with her, plus she is hot. You never know buddy, you never know.
