I'm minding my own business, strolling through the isles looking for Pop tarts, when I start to notice the "upper class" members of the supermarket are glaring at me. I go up to the 10 items or less line, it has about 8 people in it. I have my poptarts (strawberry, frosted), A bottle of milk, bread, jelly, honey, ice, and a copy of Mountain Bike magazine. Now things get interesting.
The lady at the counter seems nice enough, but the other patrons are another story. The bag boy doesn't bag my groceries. I kinda shrug and start bagging it myself, while he sits in the little conclave and breathes at me. Awkward.
So after an ornate about face to get my change, the man behind me goes off. He is mid to late 30's. He has an A & F t-shirt on, expensive warn jeans, and what looked like Nike Air 2.0's (red).
He goes into various anti-war slander, the usuall
"Bush sucks.... Republicans are losing the war"
"dying in vain"
"Peace now"
etc.
Now, this goes on for a good 3 minutes, with other people in line joining in to the mans crusade against me. Then it got personal. A blond bimbo trophy wife second to last in line SCREAMS at me, "I hope you AND all of your friends DIE in Iraq for being so ignorant!"
Oh bitch, best not be saying that to a D.E.P'ing Marine that just had his first week of hand to hand combat training.
Now, this whole time, I had stood there, studious like, taking it all in. But now it was my turn.
First was the man. I commented on his appearance, and what it showed me. I went through the whole line of people belittling me and the others who didn't have a voice. It felt good.
Then, after I was done, the bimbo lady says to me again, "And what do you have to show for yourself hotshot?"
I did a quarter turn to my right, where a flag was hanging from the ceiling. I came to attention and saluted, while saying:
"I am a Citizen of the United States of America, A United States Marine, A Firefighter for this state. I think I've shown enough."
End salute, about face, and I walked out of the store.
Now, aside from being able to assert my linguistic skills into a situation, doesn't that situation feel.... Wrong?
Anyway, these are the kind of people that embarass me. These are the people that give liberals a bad name.
I think you'll find that Southern liberals are a very different breed, and we like guns just as much as the conservatives do... lol
We also respect servicemen, even if we don't agree with the war. Thankfully, things have changed a lot since Vietnam, although it sounds like they haven't much in California.
But there you are complaining about how everyone thinks soldiers are idiots, when you're doing the same thing to a certain group of people. Not all "Asians" are Pakistani-Muslim-Jihad-Joe's that hate on soldiers. I know alot of "Asian" (I know you mean people from South Asia) that love what's going on with the war on terror as, I quote, "It's about time the world realised how bad Islam is" - their words, not mines.daddyofdeath wrote:

Thats a really shitty story, and no one should be publicly abused like that.
With that said the view that soldiers should be free of criticism just because they're soldiers is BS. And so is that "We'll die for your freedom shit". Because insurgents in Iraq are really threatening the average Americans freedom (read:oil supply)

I'll tell you from two perspectives...first, being in BDU's for a majority of my time for 9 years, I have never experienced anything like you say. Even walking through the center (accidently) of an anti-war protest in Germany, I've never experienced anything like this. I have experienced a lot of random kindness, thank you's, etc., from all age groups and in all different places, but never anything like this from my 2 years near Monterrey, CA, my 2 years in Newport News, VA, or my year in Ft. Sill. Even the Koreans at the height of being virulently anti-american could still be caught giving up seats for me in crowded restaurants during my tour there. So, on the count of this being absolutely true, I call bullshit.
My second perspective, as a game designer/magazing writer for the last 3 years, will say this is a great pro-American wingnut piece and plays perfectly to a rightwing audience. You've managed to hit almost every point -
- A few "snotty lib" stereotype strawmen
- A little "Vietnam vets are baby killers" nostalgia
- The color "red" carefully included
- You've got a big American flag conveniently hanging around...at least there wasn't a bible in your story somewhere too, or did I miss it?
- The "Persecuted Hero" by those that just "couldn't understand"
- Good calm military speech-making, hoo-rah devil dog...
- I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm freeeeeeeeeeeeee...
- A good solid "wink" at the reader with the last line. Bravo (seriously!).
If this was indeed your completely original work, I'd say you have solid writing potential for someone your age. A little real life experience and a little better command of vocabulary and you'd be easily competing with Bill Kristol, and blow away Malkin or Coulter. I do wish you the best in your career as a US Marine and writer. Smokejumper school is Goodfellow AFB, one of my alma maters as well...just don't get caught near the bunkers no matter what she says about "nobody is around", you'll be trying to convince some Air Force SP with a nervous tick to put down his weapon before anyone gets hurt. Again, enjoy your future career, and keep up the writing, you never know when it will come in handy.
Strykker, i feel for you dude. When i was still in the ATC (air cadets), there was a point that we weren't allout to wear our regular blue uniform or cammies un public (unless at a public event like doing duty at an airshow etc) cuz shit got so bad, espcially where i lived.
I lived in Chatham, home of Brompton Barracks where all the Royal Engineers and REME's trained and a hell of a lot of them were based there. There were loads of stabbings at the local pubs of guys in uniform and i think it's fucking sick.
I remember once when we got back from a day at the range about 4 years ago (before we were banned from wearing cammies in public) and a few of us went to McDonalds at about 22.00. It wasn't busy, but it wasn't quiet either. Anyways, they saw us come in, the manager whipped out the back and someone came, opened a till up and took our orders. And he was like, that IS to take away, right.
I mean, jeezus. I was 15 and the otheres wer between 16 and 20, and those feckers just wanted to get rid of us.
anyways, +1 for you.

I believe in the freedom of speech, but I also believe in weeding out sympathizers -- they're a danger to everyone, whether they are in America or the U.K. or anywhere else.... We must keep an eye on such people.

I take back my opinion after some consideration (actually a re-read with my American college professor drinking buddy here in Kharkiv), my feeling now is that this is the most genius (yet extremely cynical) poke at the wingnuts I've ever seen on this board. The same genius that made the Borat character great was used here to ultimate effect. To top it off, its all there right in front of your faces from the first post. Ballsariffic brilliant. My hat is off to Strykker if this is indeed his original work. If it isn't, then he picked the wrong guy to plagerize because he just unwittingly helped punk half the board.
Credit to USMarine for smelling bullshit first, even if he couldn't put his finger on it. Devil dogs got noses...not fingers anyways. Its ok man, leave the thinking to the intel analysts, we'll just let you know what to shoot.
Strykker, please PM me, I may have a real job for you if you ever reconsider your enlistment.
*shrugs* Gorilla, you're probably right, and we agree on things about 99% of the time.
I just made my response to show that plenty of "liberals" would never act like this. I have met actual people that fit the descriptions in the story. Some of them were rich elitists while others are ignorant college kids, and many of them unfortunately consider themselves liberal.

Eh, I don't care really, if he tricked us. This is the internet. I could be a 95 year-old pedophile living in a dungeon in your neighborhood for all you know...
Now that I re-read it, I looked for what you mentioned, and you have a point. It really manages to bring forth all the things that are usually mentioned when people complain about how they are treated. It also has every opposition you could think of, and the American flag is...well, strange. Hell, if I was American, I would feel a slight surge of patriotism reading that. But I'm not.
Cleverly done...

as to the validity, all I will say to the nay-sayers is that Yes, this happened. I sit here, before the computer, eating those pop tarts I purchased. They are frosted, but I don't toast them because then the strawberry turns into fucking lava in my mouth. And I didn't fabricate it for a karma ploy either, but it kinda turned into that. Bullshit. I don't believe this for a second.
I am right with you buddy. No Marine Corps recruiter would ever let a DEP enlistee wear digital cammies with the EGA embroidered on them. No one on a MCB would allow a DEP enlistee to wear them either. Recruiters are not even allowed to wear their utility uniforms out in public while recruiting. These are things the Marine Corps takes very seriously. I spent 4 weeks doing recruiting assistance after my first deployment to Afghanistan and I know none of these things would be tolerated.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:
