I just installed BF2: SF. I put the CD in, closed the drive, and waited. The screen goes black. I wait eagerly.
Suddenly, a small error box comes up. It says :

mods/bf2/shaders/lightning.fx not found!

What does this mean? Where can I find this file?

What the hell is going on?

What do you mean there is no regedit??? How can your computer function without it? Do you have the right admin privileges? If you still can't find it, reinstall windows. (sucks but that's about all you can do)

Are you running on a flat panel monitor? If so, the refresh rate may be holding you up. I know it sounds silly, but it can happen. I was receiving a shader error when I tried to run through a flat panel. It may be trying to run at 85Hz, doing this will immediately cause it to crash back to the desktop, with no chance to change the settings from inside the game.

ya ive had that exact same error, i think it happens if u install special forces after the patch, or something related to the order of adding and removing parts of bf2 (patch, expansions, mods).

Uninstall BF2 and any related mods or expansions u see on the add/remove list.

You can't get regedit to come up? Well download "registry cleaner," its free. then select everything bf2 related from the list and select remove. It will probably be simpler than hunting through all those "hkey" folders anyway. You may need to be logged into windows with administrator priveleges, so if its the family computer, get your parents or whoever to log on.

To be on the safe side, reinstall in this order. BF2, SF, patch 1.41, then any mods u run (PR, bf2pro, etc). That solved it for me.

BF2 > SF > 1.41 > EF > AF > 1.41

Lol, I just reinstalled special forces and got this. God I love the genious that is DICE. Now I get to delete and reinstall everything just because those retards put the automatic patch update in that expansion.
