Stephen Colbert is a pretty average person IRL, only in character is he a demi-god.
I would say it still does as far as writing goes, look at "Borat" Sasha Baron Cohen educated @ Cambridge..Ratzinger wrote:

In Britain a lot of the best comedy comes from the upper classes eg College revues, but US comedy seems to be Jewish or Black.
Of course there are a few exceptions like the Family Guy, or back to Roseanne and Married with Children, but these seem to be few and far between.
Any reason?

People like Ian Frenais and Tim Brooke-Taylor are still writing.
Because here in the states, minorities can get away with making jokes about other races. White people get called racist if they joke about other races.Ratzinger wrote:

Question answered.
America is much more obsessed with racism than we (the UK) are. In comedy, anything goes. You should see Mock the Week:
Wait for the second joke in "Scenes we'd like to see," about 50 secs in, and 1 min 50 mins in.
Lots of Muslim ones in here.
In Britain, if its comedy, anything goes.

This shouldn't be in D&ST. You are stating your opinion as fact, which is an incredibly ignorant thing to do in my opinion.
I wouldn't say that's true. What I would say is that there is an immense amount of diversity in British comedy. From working class comics like Peter Kay, to all the Cambridge footlights alumni seen in comedy.KILLSWITCH wrote:

Which Is why I said later in the thread that a lot of the upper classes do a lot of writing for comedy shows, such as Richard Curtis, who alongside Rowan Atkinson , wrote a hell of a lot of the material that went into the ever popular sitcom 'Blackadder'. Curtis had a very privileged childhood.Bertster7 wrote:

nah, I'm just calling out Leary on some of his rape of Hicks material. debatable? yes. In Fact, I like Dennis Leary, I was just summing up the idea that if you want to say Leary is a legendary commedian of sorts, his past has a few marks against it, which should be reviewed. While I like Leary, Bill Hicks was genious, and seemed to never given credit for it, much less robbed, again debatable. Im not black balling Leary at all, I'm just pointing out faults in a very quick and vaguely explanatory manner.

After watching that first Gervais clip, it made me wonder if an American comedian could make a joke about wanking over watching a halocaust scene in Schindler's List considering the large Jewish population in the States.KILLSWITCH wrote:

My favorite comedian. The man is just funny although his acting gigs have been very poor. Especially those stupid Sierra Mist commercials.QuadDamage@U wrote:

Nah, I agree with you. Hicks was original. Leary stole most of his material from Hicks, including smoking cigs onstage and his delivery. My response was to the OP, sorry it got confused.RoosterCantrell wrote:

Seriously though... Good white American comedians... George Carlin, Bill Maher, Dennis Miller (in the 90s, not now), Robin Williams, The Daily Show (Jon Stewart is the only Jewish one, I believe), Stephen Colbert, and Conan O'Brien.
Oh yeah, and even though I'm not into most of the Blue Collar comedian stuff, Bill Engvall is basically the redneck's thinking man (or vice versa). Ron White has his moments as well.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and Steve Carrell is awesome... lol

Now, George Carlin I'll give ya, and I've always thought of Robin Williams as something else - look, the guy doesn't fit any categories, and even other comedians say they can't keep up with him (can't be just the coke, cos poor old Richard Pryor was good, but he couldn't touch Williams). He's in his own box.
I guess I didn't really mean minorities as such, more "not mainstream" type thing, like Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers...
What about the US's tragic effort at "The Office"? God, that was worse than their rip-off of "Man about the House".....
