                     June, 3rd 16.00h     --->     until       --->      June, 4th  16.00h

Foreword
We accept and respect all efforts and the work behind producing and designing a patch for a game like Battlefield 2. However, the purpose of a patch is enhancing a game for the customers - not only representing ideas of the publisher

This can be traced as follows:

With the release of patch 1.3 Electronic Arts and Dice slapped many gamers in the face.

    * the patch blocks the Alternative Battlefield Ranking (ABR) which was developed gamers and has been approved by DICE (more information)
    * a petition of more than 10.000 active gamers which was asking for an introduction of "squad hopping" as a server option has been ignored by Electronic Arts (more information)
    * many alternative game modes in Battlefield 2 modifications provided by the community are not working anymore or not properly. Modding teams have not been informed about these changes
    * the current patch contains some good improvements (search for servers for example) but is unfortunately is as faulty as version 1.2 (ingame server browser, crashes)

Thus, we request the publisher and game developer:

    * to contact the developers of ABR and to fulfill promises given previously
    * to handle petitions of gamers more seriously
    * to test patches even more correctly in future
    * to inform modding teams in advance about changes via release notes

To form this protest more distinctly, we will stop playing Battlefield 2 for one day on Saturday June 3rd and we will make our servers inaccessible. All servers taking part in this action will be protected with a password and will be labeled with

bf2-bday.info |

What BF2-BDAY is supposed to be
With this campaign we would like to convince DICE and EA to communicate with players and modding teams in advance before releasing a patch instead of delivering accomplished facts.

What BF2-BDAY is not supposed to be
BF2 B-Day is not supposed to be a simple "Fuck You" to the employees over at Dice and EA as you can read it throughout so many signatures and forums. This day is supposed to make clear that any change of the game is up to us - the people who keep the game with their tools, their mods, and their servers alive since Battlefield 1942 was released.

I'm taking a week off.  Thanks to the new patch unranked servers are no longer capable of using unlocks.

On the surface you would think no big deal, but....  TWL has canceled all BF2 and SF ladders because an unranked and password protected match server no longer has unlocks.  It is also against the TOS for a clan to use their ranked server and password lock it for a match.

No more ladder matches eliminates one of the main things that kept this game interesting despite changes and adaptations to patches.

Typically I would be apt to agree with this type of cause, however I have a few issues with the basis of this boycott.

Unfortunately the purpose of a patch is not specifically to 'enhance the game for the customer' more accurately it is to address bugs/exploits in the software that were known and shipped in order to maintain a release date as well as to further complete the vision of the game according to the developers. Generally speaking a patch should enhance the playability of the game for the customers since it aims to fix bugs and make the game better, however this is not always the case as changing code in a complex video game will almost always introduce new issues elsewhere.

Customers by definition do not have a place in the production cycle of a product. Since video games are a part of the entertainment industry let's use the example of a film. A film is produced with a specific vision in mind, once this vision is complete the movie is shown to the public. People who pay to see the movie do not then instantly have the right to call up the director and say, "Hey, I hated this part of your movie, you should change it!" That is simply not how things work in capitalism.

This being said, it is always in the best interests of the producer to please their patrons. Business will be much better with a good product.

Ultimately, in my opinion, your effort is rather futile. EA/DICE has already sold the product to everyone who would be boycotting, they have already made their return on the production costs and as such won't really care about some people not playing for a single day.

Yeah, DICE and EA won't be hurting, but a massive fallout of players from the majority of ranked servers would be a stark indicator of market thought and would at least sent a clear message. Much like the "Don't Buy Anything Day" in the U.S. -- the goal isn't to kill businesses, it's really just a show of consumer power.

(As my personal aside, I am really pissed about ABR being broken and about the squad hopping "fix" that's been employed.)

I figure that boycotting Armored Fury would be much more effective than boycotting what you bought already.

I support this and so does my clan, but i have to say i already have a solution to taking some of your anger out on EA....

I've renamed my single player AI names to the names of the people who work in EA & DICE's BF2 department. Only have a few of them so far.

I pwned the shit outta EA & DICE yesterday!!!!!

How is not playing a game we've already paid for, on servers we've already paid for, for one day going to achieve this?  The money has already been pushed in, by not playing we are only giving them free money.

IMO if you want to make a difference, stop playin BF2 altogether and stop renting servers.  Go back to something like Black Hawk Down but keep up the pressure on the forums.
