I've been looking for somewhat relaxed, mellow and repetitive music to listen to as ambiance. Most ambient music, however, has no dynamic contrast and gets a little boring. Both of the above songs have great climaxes, Auto Rock being essentially one big crescendo. They're a forerunner of post-rock, rock instrumentation (plus some piano) used in rather relaxed and melodic ways.

@.Sup: Yes, big fan of Jazz here, I play all flavors of sax. I've been listening to something a friend tells me is "acid jazz"; electronica with some jazz instrumentation. Amon Tobin does mostly electronica, but the Permutation album has a lot of jazz on it, Nova being my favorite. If you're not familiar with Amon Tobin, but watch Top Gear, you may recognize Easy Muffin.

Check it out, seriously. Opeth is one of the most musically "intelligent" bands of our time. Their harmonies, their use of "light and shade" and their ability to convey the mood of the lyrics/images/progression so clearly is amazing. Also, their use of complex rhythms, poly rhythms, unusual time signatures and very their unique harmonies create a very distinctive sound.

I'm in love with these guys at the moment. They have an album for any mood I'm I can never get sick of listening to them.

Those songs ain't bad but I prefer The Grand Conjuration and Demon of the Fall.

Zimmer reccomended me The Decemberists yesterday. Apparently they are "indie, folk, lo.fi, pop, concept, rock, alternative", whatever that means. It's good, anyway.

The Decemberists are like one of the big 'must listen' American/Canadian indie bands. Like Neutral Milk Hotel or Death Cab For Cutie.

Some of their stuff is great but after a while the vocal style starts to nag me a bit. It sounds to me like they're over-cooking the folk-vocals a bit.

Music with a DIY ethic, really. Characterized by lo-fi recording quality- vintage two-tracks or walls of fuzz and distortion. Sometimes the highly-refined and polished 'indie' album just seems a little soul-less, as well as slightly ironic. Listening to bands like The Decemberists, you're pretty much listening to the Lady Gaga's of the 'indie' umbrella. They're token, overdone... I don't really like the perfect-mixing and over-produced quality of their albums. Lo-fi is a creative and aesthetic reaction against these mainstream record-company releases-- it's raw, it's full of passion and energy, and it includes all of the rough edges and dirt that a genre tagged as 'indie' more rightfully deserves. There's no point terming yourself as an ind(ie)pendent band when your albums are recorded at the same quality and studio as The Pussycat Dolls latest LP. It just becomes a boring, flat mess.

It can be for practical/economical reasons or for creative reasons.

I don't think the common-view is that lo-fi is 'cool', or 'cooler' than hi-fi bands, as such. It's just an artistic and stylistic decision that an artist/band makes. It attracts listeners such as myself that have perhaps grown tired of the more polished and over-produced direction that 'indie' music has taken in the last 10-15 years since becoming so paradoxically popular. Some lo-fi bands are just as popular as the indie-scene figureheads though-- don't have the illusion that it's an underground-scene of 'too cool for indie' kids. Deerhunter, Mt.Eerie and The Mountain Goats are three acts that are just as well-known as any indie band, and they record with heavy lo-fi (and shoegaze) elements.

Lo-fi and noise-rock are slightly different labels, anyway. They overlap though, for obvious reasons. One of my favourites of recent times is Wavves.

Grizzly Bear.

Their latest album (Veckatimest or something, can't remember the spelling) is one of the best-examples of perfectly-recorded indie, ever.

Every nuance of their sound has been tweaked to perfection.

So I just did a really quick scan of various torrent trackers and warez sites and took a quick note of the number of times that Jay-Z's new album (Blueprint 3) has been downloaded ...

I then took my calculator and added them up. The total came to 16858. And that's just after about 5mins of searching on just 7 websites.

I read a survey (that I cannot find the link to) that said that illegal music downloads account for 18% of music downloads. With 25% of the market belonging to iTunes and about 7" to Amazon (the largest share in the marked was "Other").

On the assumption that a lot of people have pre-ordered Jay-Z's album on iTunes and that some have either pre-ordered it to download or to have on CD at other online stores ... then that's a fuck load of downloads!

So my question: What's so great about Jay-Z?

Jay-Z was good back in the day, now I'm talking 95-01 (R.Doubt - Blueprint). Reasonable Doubt is one of my favorite albums, classic . As of now he has gone mainstream, way mainstream.

Another thing I've noticed is that he used to be able to rap very quick. But as time progressed his vocals have literally slowed down. As you can see here.

In an interview with Bill Maher, Jay-Z was asked why he doesn't rap as quick, and he replied "I used to have a lot to say". He's just extending his career, this one is gonna be way commercial. I don't even think I'll download it. I still got respect for his early work though.
