I've been eying up this exact computer and specs for about a month now. How in the hell did you get it so cheap?
Here ya go:

Apply coupon code: FXP3F0HKJKQS97 to get $497 off.  And I had my Amex card synced to my Twitter account, and tweeted #AMEXDell for an additional $100 credit.

$497 off XPS 15 laptop order code DNDAD02

Here's a refurb , similar specs, 17" minus full HD and GPU.  Just to add perspective.

I had no idea they even offered such huge coupons or discounts!

I won't have the cash to buy the laptop before the coupon expires, but it's good to know they even exist.

Thanks!

Should be good enough for the CAD he needs to do at home and some gaming. Nice of him to pay this time lol, and it only cost $900 which is pretty bloody good for ozland.
Wouldnt you want an nVidia card so he could use CUDA for CAD?
From all the benchmarks and tests I've seen CUDA makes very little difference in performance in CAD programs on consumer level cards.

If we were comparing high-end Quadro and Firepro cards then individual features (eg CUDA) would be important. However, to get a workstation card that would actually be worth getting I would be looking at a minimum of $400+ dollars. Something like a HD6870 (or nvidia equivalent) gives him enough power for the limited CAD he will be doing at home, as well as gaming. So then the decision was simply best card for the best price. From what i've seen there would be basically no difference between a HD6870 and GTX560 for example, as the gaming cards are more restricted by their drivers in CAD application, rather than hardware or specific features.

E: thats just from my understanding, I haven't used CAD since high school.
I've seen no difference between hi end Quadro cards and lower priced gaming cards.
I've used $1,000 cards and just not seen any benefit, just as many graphic glitches, they fall over at least as often and they die pretty quickly.
If anything gaming cards seem to work better.

I'd generally pick Nvidia as they tend to be more compatible with CAD.

More deals sure to come in the next month when the Ivy laptops become available.  So they'll be clearancing these "older' generation laptops.

Check this website.  slickdeals.net.  I get info on tons of insane deals.

Edit:  I could have also gone the EPP discount route, but that was only for $376 off, versus the $497 the coupon offered.

Yeah well I definitely wasn't going to fork out for a workstation card just for his home PC. The only workstation card in the right price range was the workstation version of a HD6570. And that was going to be bollocks for gaming, so I just went for the gaming HD6870.

After much thought and deliberation, I saved myself £120 and went for the Corsair 500R. Couldn't be happier with the purchase. Got an extra 2x120mm fans with it to increase cooling capacity. Fantastic case and incredibly easy to set up.

I want that case. I might be buying after the summer - since i'll be working over the summer, and will therefore have some money.
I'd be interested to know how you have your fans set up.

Quite a few similar deals coming from HP, Sony, Lenovo, with similar specs for a bit cheaper.  But I'm willing to pay the extra premium for the display: Truelife B+RGLED.

I had a 550W power unit and it died with a pretty much similar setup. Apparently couldn't take the load in the end. Got a 650W as a replacement.

This site recommended 377 Watts for the build ... a 500 W unit is 33% more than recommended.

I wasn't looking at AMD ... but (first) isn't this the correct comparison on your first card?

http://www.hwcompare.com/8241/geforce-g … n-hd-6850/

The AMD is showing (at most) 15% improvement, and the card above is 30% overclocked from the 406GTX used in the hwcompare numbers (this is nVidia's 2nd generation of the 460 GTX, with core clock changed from 675 to 867, and memory clock increased from 900 to 1012).  So ... is there much of a difference?

Hmm. 377 W for that build seems really REALLY low. I was concerned that 500 is low... Of course I'm no electrician so take my concerns with a grain of salt (if even that). If it works and is enough power I'll shut my damn trap!

I just ran 3dmark on it, and it scored 4045 (Performance), which is in the ballpark of the AMD 6870 on Toms Hardware:

500W is fine for that system.

Realistically, a good quality 500-550w PSU is fine for pretty much anything but a crossfire/SLI setup. And then you'd be wanting to step up to 850w (although a 750w would do)
