I've been working out since January, regularly but nothing to strenuous and I recently got a job at a health club. For the first month I worked out 3 days a week....all of my upper body. (In all I've been casually lifting for about 3-4 months and hardcore for about 2) In the following month, I've worked out 5 days a week, my schedule looking something like this:

Monday - Chest/Back/Lats/Abs
Tuesday - Biceps/Triceps/Forearms
Wednesday - Chest/Triceps/Abs
Thursday -  Back/Lats/Forearms

Saturday - Biceps/Triceps/Abs

I work out hard, really strenuous and on various machines and free wieghts....but I can't seem to gain any weight. I eat healthy, I add whey protein to my drinks, and most of the time I get the correct amount of sleep. I just cant put on weight.

I have a naturally thin build, but I'm very athletic at 6 foot 155 pounds and I'm 20 years old.

How do I bulk up and get big/stronger? What more do I have to do?

I've gotten some freakish lumps of "muscle" on my arms over the past few months. A report on anaerobic and aerobic exercise helped me set my "exercise" schedule.

5 minutes of walking/running with light weights in hand. This is warm up, an essential prelude to any exercise. Move your hands like you would when running, lifting the weights as you move. Don't bonk yourself on the head, I've had it happen to me once or twice when I went too gusto.

20 minutes of solid exercise. In my case, it's weight lifting. You can walk/run while lifting weights. The maximum time to focus on one arm is 2 minutes. Take a 1 minute break from that arm and work on your other arm. If working both arms, take a 1 minute break for both arms, but move around so you don't cool down.

5 minutes of walking/running with light weights in hand. This is cool down. As I'm not interested in creating a seperate set of exercise for cool down, I've repeated the warm up exercises. Again, mind your head.

Your body will get used to the exercises, so either change the exercises you do, or increase the load you carry. Don't be a hero, slightly increase the load. Pulling a muscle can put you out of commission from days to weeks (horror stories from Wiki).

I haven't been monitoring my diet, but I eat anything I can, and often go for another plate. Beef, tofu, veggies (broccoli, onions, leeks, eggplant), chicken, pinto beans are what I eat mostly. Basically, as natural as possible, I don't try those "miracle" concoctions. No sport drinks, mixtures, mostly water. Sometimes soda, fruit juice.

It's going to take time to see your results no matter what you do, but don't forget to do some running in addition to lifting. If anything, you'll at least build endurance.

find the largest weight you can successfully curl 8 times
do so with both arms
wait a minute or two, and repeat

once you can only do 4, decrease the weight you're curling until you can do 10
wait a inute or two, repeat

once you can only do 4, decrease weight, etc etc

it's rather embarrassing to sit there straining to curl 10 pound weights, but the feeling is great, and that will help you gain muscle

never do any less than 3-6 sets for any muscle group, if you do any less you'll just get the muscles more capable of doing small bursts of work, but nothing sustained and they won't gain much mass

You could have a scary efficient metabolism like I do. I've attempted weight training, got on a proper diet, and eaten a good full 5 meals a day. I'll gain about two pounds but burn it off either over night or sitting at home watching tv .

I usually have the same problem with gaining weight. i'm 5'9 and 145 lbs. i could easily get up to 160 in 2 months though, if I eat a ton of food. (i'm staying lighter for mma) but last year when I did bulk up, I just ate a ton of food. I had at least 4000 calories a day. yes it can cost a lot to eat that much food, but it's easy to bulk up if you eat more.  also, spread your meals out more. I would always eat every 2 hours. it also depends a bit on how many reps/sets and what types of lifts you do.

Well im about 5'11 and I weigh around 220lbs and by no means is that weight all due to muscle and i am losing weight through doing weights training but due to my bulk I find it easier to do the heavier weights, when I started do my core, back and arms on lat pull downs after only a about 1 hour of training getting my muscle use to the weight I could easily do 190lbs same when im doin bench press when I started I struggled to do 60lbs but now I can do around 165lbs. but I havent being able to go to the gym recently with exams at school so Ill have to fit it in around exams.

If you guys have any tips for me that will improve my core muscle strength please tell me as I would like to know.

My workout routine has added 15 lbs in 5 months.

I'm similar build to you, 6' 160lbs, 7% body fat when not exercising
178lbs 5% body fat currently

I swim for 7-10 hours a week, usually 1.5 hours per swim. That basically fills in my cardio, which is something I noticed you have not added to your routine.

I'm not going to list my movements or localized lifts, because I don't believe it's super important. However my rep layout is always 12-10-8-6.

As for your lifts, are you lifting lighter weights, more reps? Or heavy weights, less reps? If your going for Bulk try for heavier weights and less reps.

something like maybe 3 sets of 8 reps with a weight 80% of your max in the movement.

Furthermore, quit ignoring your damn legs. Squats, cleans, hammy curls, calf raises are your friend. Large movements like the aforementioned do a lot to stimulate the burning of fat as well as balancing your routine to include legs.

-Almost forgot, Diet. Eat smaller meals, more often. Also, to add mass you must have carbohydrates and protein. A good rule of thumb for folks trying to yoke out is to eat 1 gram of protein for every lb of bodyweight. So for you we are talking 160grams of protein per day. IF you translate that into both food and protein powder (whey), you're looking at a crazy intake. That's the price though, so really consider what it takes to gain what your looking for.

--secondary postnote. If you want, which I am totally against, is the usage of legal steroid like supplements such as: andro, creatine, ephedrine, etc. Lots of people looking to add ridiculous bulk choose creatine,  this however must be taken with caution as you must also increase your water intake. I recommend to anybody trying creatine (i've never done it) to drink like a fish, be drinking water all day every day. My buddy recently started his routine, and has responded quite well to creatine. That being said, you don't need it. Go the natural way as much as you can, like anabolic steroids I can bet we are going to find out the real dangers of creatine usage some years down the road.

Good luck man, and remember weight training is a slow payoff. Every time you aren't sore, you need to add weight and go harder, push your limits every time.

If you wanna gain weight you have to eat 4 to 5 healthy meals a day, fruit and vegetable snacks in between.
Do this for 2 weeks and you will see results.
you will get tired of eating but that is what you gotta do. I tried it and gained weight after a week, but then I get tired of eating and stopped...
Protein shakes aren't going to do anything unless you take then with your 4 to 5 meals a day.

Creatine really does work it's sorta like turbo for your muscles, plus it helps you retain water more in your muscle and they will look bigger and you will gain weight. It has no side effects apart from you having to need a piss a bit more often. Yeah someone said 8 rep's thats spot on aparrantely it's 10-12 for hypertrophy but I do 8. I've been told cut out cardio too if you wanna bulk up.

Rest is very important your working out for consecutive days how about a one day rest between each gym session. You seem to recover quite well if your working out your chest after two days. Do you ache in the morning on the parts you've worked out? How long do you stay in the gym 45 minutes is a nice time anything more and your probably not working strenuous enough to pack on muscle and weight.

Machines being honest are not very good everything you do on a machine you could do with free weights apart from lat pull downs. Free weights are good as they help you build your stabilising muscles too my stomach has slowly become slimmer from free weights. I used to just go on the machines had poor results, I switched completely to free weights and have gained 0.2 of a stone and plus everyone has said my arms are definately getting bigger.

Post one actual routine like your Monday one.

Maybe you're lifting to much weight to soon and burning muscle?
I see alot of people do that down the gym but I doubt that's you.

You most likely come to the hardest part of you're training "gaining weight" do what every one else says eat chicken, red meat, pasta and take protein. Don't get stuck and start taking roids like a mate of mine did.

I personally think you're best bet would be hiring a good gym trainer or start going to a more "body building" gym.

Thanks for the responses guys

-For those who said to add in cardio, I play in bball pickup games 3-4 days a week plus soccer on the weekends, I'm covered

- So I'm hearing free weights are better for bulking? And Heavier weights less reps?

Edit:

My Monday routine:
- Bench Press (chest)
- Incline bench press (chest)
- Corded Machine(chest)
- Machine (Chest)
- Push ups (chest)
- Dung bell incline bench (chest)

- 3 different machines that work my back (back)

- the lat machine and row (lats)

Heavy weight, low reps (while maintaining form)

lots and lots of protein (both diet and supplements)
