As a Kiwi I'm in the same boat as TuataraDude. I'll probably go for 'Tralia because they generaly play a more interesting game. However I don't realy care who wins.

For anyone who doesn't know, the Ashes is not a trophy but an Urn. Inside are the burned wickets from the 'first' Ashes test, (although obviously it was't called that then, but it was the same competition.) When Australia thrashed the English in ths first tournament people said it was the ashes of English Cricket, (death.)

Indeed, he is the one getting the wickets, BL to Martyn though.

The series is named after a satirical obituary published in The Sporting Times in 1882 following the match at The Oval, in which Australia beat England in England for the first time. The obituary stated that English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. The English media dubbed the next English tour, to Australia (1882-83) as the quest to regain The Ashes.

A small terracotta urn was presented to the England captain Ivo Bligh by a group of Melbourne women at some point during the 1882-83 tour. The contents of the urn are reputed to be the ashes of an item of cricket equipment, possibly a bail, ball or stump. The urn is not used as a trophy for the Ashes series, and whichever side "holds" the Ashes, the urn normally remains in the MCC Museum at Lord's because of its age and fragility

Right, Im going back to bed, shit I cant I got work.

346 - 3

That short ass scores another ton.  I may call him a name but he's a class batsman no doubt bout that.

I expect to be woken up 2moro with the TV telling me either, Strayer are 600+/6 dec or 600+ all out.  Either way England wont win this test match from here.  I dont think they'll win the series full stop, but it'll be impossible for them to come back from this and will be lucky to score 300+ in the 1st innings.

I didnt expect much different from that score this morning but it made today (thurs) feel like a Monday morning where I been on the piss all weekend.

Classic...... Looks like our boys are back on form. Hope the tests get a little more interesting though.

Just so all you Americans know, it's for bragging rights like this that we stay in the commonwealth. The commonwealth games are great for them...

This probably only applies to UK n Aussies.  Poms vs Convicts.
It should read "POHMS" not Poms, or more accurately, P.O.H.M. which stood for Prisoner Of Her Majesty.  The term refers to those people who were shipped to Australia for commiting crimes.  It is a common misconception that the Australians have always refered to the British Nationals as "Pommies".  In recent decades, it has been used as a colloquial nickname, but in fact, refers to a White Australian, as they are the offspring of English criminals.

Everyday is a school day.
Very informative. I always thought 'Pom' was short for 'Pompous Git'. I could be forgiven...

On another note, I think this thread might give the spell checker a k'niption.

I wish I could find some of that stuff online to share here, I got all the cd's but hoped someone else would of uploaded some somewhere and save me the hard work.

Arrrrggggghhhh!!!!

What's Harmison playing at! He needs to start bowling brilliantly again as everybody's seen he can, what's wrong with him, he's just broken!

I'm glad we're playing Giles instead of Monty. Monty is a liability when fielding and Giles is much better with a bat, he's just not better at bowling by enough to justify replacing Giles as first choice.

At this time I'd like to congratulate Australia on their victory.

I mean come on, first ball of the ashes and it gets sent straight to 2nd slip? Still, hope you Aussies enjoy it, should be a bit of fun for you lot.

It's pretty hard to bowl well in the first innings of a series against so much batting talent on such a good wicket. I think the result of the first match may have been decided by the coin toss. Then again, I reckon a draw is most likely (at least I hope the Poms put up a fight...).
