Do you believe this assassination was backed by the Syrian Government?

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanese Christian cabinet minister Pierre Gemayel, an outspoken critic of
Syria, was assassinated near Beirut on Tuesday, plunging Lebanon deeper into a crisis over ties with its dominant neighbor.

At least three gunmen rammed their car into Gemayel's vehicle, then leapt out and riddled it with bullets, firing at Gemayel with silencer-equipped automatic weapons at point-blank range in the Christian Sin el-Fil neighborhood, witnesses said.

Ten bullet holes were seen around the window of the driver's seat of his grey car. The two front seats were soaked in blood.

The son of assassinated former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri blamed Syria for the killing, but Damascus condemned the murder.

Gemayel, 34, was rushed to hospital where he later died of his wounds. Television footage showed hundreds of angry and weeping family members and supporters gathering at the hospital.

Angry protesters in the Christian town of Zahle in eastern Lebanon blocked off streets and shouted slogans against Hezbollah bollah and Christian opposition leader Michel Aoun.

Gemayel's father urged supporters to remain calm and avoid retribution.

"I have one wish, that tonight be a night of prayer to contemplate the meaning of this martyrdom and how to protect this country," former President Amin Gemayel told reporters outside the hospital where the body of his son Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel was taken.

"I call on all those who appreciate Pierre's martyrdom to preserve his cause and for all of us to remain at the service of Lebanon. We don't want reactions and revenge," he said.

"HAND OF SYRIA"

The killing is certain to heighten tensions in Lebanon amid a deep political crisis pitting the anti-Syrian majority against the pro-Damascus opposition led by Hezbollah, which is determined to topple what it sees as a pro-U.S. government.

"We believe the hand of Syria is all over the place," Saad al-Hariri, whose father Rafik al-Hariri was killed in a suicide truck bombing last year, said from Beirut shortly after Gemayel was shot dead.

"Syria strongly condemns the killing," the official Syrian news agency SANA said. The Shi'ite group Hezbollah also condemned the "low criminal act" and urged an investigation.

Gemayel, elected to parliament in 2000 and again in 2005, is the third Lebanese anti-Syrian figure to be assassinated since former prime minister Hariri's killing in February 2005.

Apparently Syria was allied with the Christians during the Lebanese Civil War including the Party that Gemayel headed.

Hariri the Younger definitely has incentive to blame this on Syria but considering the interests at play in the current negotiations following this summer's recent unpleasantness, this could be an attempt to stall the inevitable restructuring of Lebanon's government (a restructuring that will benefit the Shia bloc in Lebanon).

It could be that some of the anti-Syrian elements did away with Gemayel to create a little non-constructive chaos. Stranger things have happened recently in Lebanon. During the Civil War the Christians were allied with Israel AND Syria against the Arabs, then with Syria against the Palestinians, then the Shia were allied with Syria against the Palestinians, then the Sunnis with the Israelis against the Shia, then the Syrians and Shia against the Israelis, then the Sunni and Shia against the Palestinians, then some of the Shia with the Syrians against the Christians and some the Shia with the Christians against the Palestinians, then the Sunni and Shia against the US, then the US intervening on the side of the PLO, then the Iranians against the US, then some Christians supporting the Palestinians, then the two main Shia groups (Amal and Hezbollah) began confronting each other though both were backed by Iran, then Iraq backed the Christian government of Lebanon against Amal and Hezbollah as a kind of proxy war against Iran which led to confrontation between Iraqi and Syrian interests.

Interesting stuff and a fucking insane mess.

What?
That (roughly) was the chain of events that occurred during the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990).

My point in all of that is that Gemayel's killers could literally be anyone, even his fellow Christians.

The current leader of the second largest Christian organization, the Free Patriotic Movement, Michel Aoun (PM 1988 - 1990) drew support during his tenure from Iraq in his fight against Amal and Hezbollah. Now he's formed an alliance with Amal and Hezbollah (along with most of his Christian supporters) and is running on a platform that describes Lebanon's political system as rigged to prevent proportional representation of the Shia (which it does in part).

I even remember a few years back coming across something that described the candidates that Hezbollah ran in one of Lebanon's elections...out of 14 Hezbollah candidates 3 were Christian.

Lebanon has definitely been fucked about with by its two vastly more powerful neighbors (with occasional interventions by the US, Soviets, Saudis, Iraqis, Egyptians, and Iranians). I know a fair number of Lebanese of different confessional groups and all seem to have equal loathing for Syria, the US, Israel, and Iran.

Wonder why Syria and Hezbolla as of yesterday Still didnt watn an investigation in the UN to try and convict the murderers of the last Official? Hmmmmm, They claimed it would bring unrest in Lebbanon? Yah ok. It seems to me that these Fellows that have been snuffed out have ALOT of backers and they are Pissed.

Anyone thinking straight can see that syria is behind this, Why wouldnt they be? They (Syria and Iran) need to get the Only demorcratic country between them and Isreal under there control. If people cant see whats going on here, you must be blind. Syria and Iran, with there socalled renewed talks with Iraq are trying to get there plan of whiping Isreal off the map to happen. But from the outcry from the UN yesterday, I think they are seeing the light of whats trying to go down.
