US says it has removed 50,000 bombs in Lebanon
17 November 2006

WASHINGTON: The United States has helped remove more than 50,000 unexploded bombs in southern Lebanon since the end of the war with Israel in August, a senior US official said.

The US government's aid chief, Randall Tobias, said unexploded bombs remained a major problem in Lebanon where Israel dropped many thousands of cluster bombs. Many of those bombs are reported to be US-made.

"The effort to remove the unexploded ordnance is moving along very aggressively and we're really making a lot of progress," said Tobias, who visited Lebanon last month to check on US aid work there.

"At the time I was there, the estimate was that we had removed or assisted in the removal of about 50,000 pieces of unexploded ordnance," he added.

Other nations and the United Nations are also involved in the effort to remove unexploded ordnance in southern Lebanon.

The bombs pose a huge danger to displaced civilians trying to return to their villages after the 34-day war that pitted Hizbollah militants in Lebanon against Israel.

The State Department is investigating whether Israel violated US rules in its use of US-made rockets armed with cluster bombs in Lebanon. A State Department spokesman said the investigation was ongoing.

Israel has defended its right to use cluster bombs and says it only deploys them in accordance with international law.

Cluster bombs burst into bomblets and spread out near the ground. The United Nations has called for a freeze on the use of those bombs in or near populated areas.

The United States promised about $US250 million in aid for Lebanon following the war and Tobias said about $US100 million had been spent so far.

He said Washington was involved in building bridges and in trying to clean up after an oil spill during the war that marred parts of Lebanon's coastline and hit the fishing industry hard.

Immediately after the war, Hizbollah moved quickly to help those displaced by the war, handing out money to people in southern Lebanon whose homes were bombed.

US officials voiced strong concern at the time that Hizbollah's quick response would give the militant group the upper hand in winning the hearts and minds of the local population and that embattled Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's government would be perceived as being too slow to react.

Tobias said his agency was working hard to "build capacity" in Siniora's government and he felt US assistance was helping with this goal.

"It (US assistance) needs to be seen as an effort to help the legitimate government of Lebanon address the needs of the people," he said.

An international donors conference on Lebanon is expected to take place in Paris in January and Tobias urged other nations to follow through on about $US900 million in aid pledged at a meeting in Stockholm in September.

"We really need to urge everyone to move as quickly as they can to move their words into action on the ground. There really is a significant need for help," he said.

I guess the contractor for these bombs has been having some great vacations somewhere because he sure isn't putting the money into building good bomblets.
The US economy is a giant Ponzi scheme. And 'to big to fail' is code speak for 'niahnahniahniahnah 99 percenters'

Nice.  Is the work being done by the US military or other people from US or is it US funded (just curious)?

These are, IMHO, the sorts of initiatives which will help prevent terrorism.

Nice way of getting money and support.

Build the bombs and sell them (Good the the economy and we get to help Israel!)
Then clean up the mess (Look good to the rest of the world)

If the US really wanted to look like it's helped out the Lebanese people it can stop selling cluster bombs to Israel.

As Bubbalo already mentioned, this is a great initiative against terrorism. No, no war on terrorism needed. Just this.

Thankee kindly.

I would disagree, for two reasons:

1)  I would argue that actions like this could constitute a War on Terrorism.

2)  I would expect that some fighting would need to be done, but it should not be the primary method as it is now.

It's nice to see that Mr Schindler's armament factories are still up and running.

But there are still all the Katusha rockets that are sealed inside rooms of residential houses...

Heck there not sealed, there set up and fireing every single day.

Kudos on the cleanup, But Why? As demonstrated by a couple in this post already, what good does it do? We will still get the blame no matter How much we help and do. Its always the same old song and dance, "where did the bombe come from in the first place" Crap. Why dont we dig around the rest of the Middle east and see how much russian weaponry is burried in wait? Theres so much, its Not even measurable.

We didnt HAVE to do anything, but took the moral high road and did.

50,000+ sounds suspiciously high, what are they, vietnam lefovers? Don't get me wrong, if they're cleaning them up that can't be bad, i just doubt anyone in lebanon is going to know that it's the US that was conducting the sweep.

how about the UN call for a freeze on using katusha's in populated areas?<flamewar trigger set>

yeah but that's still an assload, if i had that many bomblets not detonate i'd want my money back, even assuming israel dropped 1000 bombs thats still 50 unexploded each, sounds kinda high

we don't know that they were supposed to detonate on impact, maybe they're hoping for civilians to accidently set them off.

I thought that cluster bomb bomblets had to be detonated on impact by international law (could be wrong though).  Other wise instead of a cluster bomb you get an instant mine field which, as seen in many areas besides the middle east, is a catastrophe waiting to happen.

You must be confused.  We're talking about Israel using US made bombs.
