I just read this article. wonder if anyone else has?
Wingsurfing
By Mr. Teamwork
Insane pastime of mentally broken soldiers, or valid battlefield tactic?
Today I would like to talk about 'Wingsurfing'. Sound's interesting, yes? Some of you might already know what Wingsurfing is, but for those of you who have not had the pleasure of viewing it, it's when someone jumps on the wing of a plane - then the plane takes off, thus it sort of looks like 'surfing' on the wing. 99% of the time this results in a unfortunate fall to the unforgiving earth below, but to the brave few who have taken up this action, it's become a valid (though some say cheap) tactic. I have seen this personally, and joined in on a bunch of players who like to try new things no matter the cost. And what I have seen them do is nothing short off amazing.
"Look Mamma I can fly!
On a few occasions I've have seen people load up SIX passengers (yes six!) on the wing of a plane, and with them all being buddies and knowing what to do and when, they fly over to the enemy base in a CTF game - and drop out SEVEN troops (Remember the pilot as well)! Quite a devastating 'shock force' less than a minute into the match, eh?. The key to this is the pilot - he or she must know the plan, and fly not as a fighter pilot, but as a cargo plane pilot. From takeoff, all members of this shall we say, 'Band of others' must go prone and face towards the front of the plane. Then the pilot needs to take off, but instead of shooting up into the sky, he/she must fly at a very low (and this is the critical part) level. But there are other hazards, if the pilot goes 15 degrees to high or low will result in the dumping of the passengers and thus creating red blobs of ex-soldiers on the ground. But the guys on the wing are not totally helpless. They can do one thing to keep themselves on the wing, which is tap forward every two seconds (or as needed) to keep themselves as close to the middle of the wing as possible. But if the pilot is good, and understands his/her role in this little raid, they will not have to do any correcting! The motto for this rather insane tactic is 'Low and level!'
"I seen em'"
The several times I have seen this done (and I was on the wing twice!), we were accused of cheating right away, with people saying what we did was 'impossible'. And as you can imagine they weren't so nice about voicing there objections. But back to the topic at hand, and here's the kicker, if the team is really good the 6 guys can jump off over the enemy base, while the pilot stays in the air. While the guys are floating down to the flag, the pilot fly's around and actually lands the plane as close to the flag pole as possible! One person gets the flag, and the others cover him/her from all the leftover troops in the enemy base! (Most are gone because they are rushing for your flag!) It's helpful to have one medic on the team, and the flag carrier should be a medic as well. Then the pilot either A: Gives up his plane to the flag runner, or B: The flag runner gets back on the wing, and they both fly home! You might ask, "But Mr. Teamwork, for the love of humanity, what about the 5 guys left behind in the enemy base? I thought the motto was 'We all go home!!!'". Well fear not, for they are in the process of hiding in the enemy base, so when the flag is capped or somehow returned, they can grab it again and try a jeep or tank run home! When this works (and with a well-trained team it works most of the time!) this is a really great strategy. It gets you a quick cap, AND it 'breaks' the enemy spirit to fight as well.
"Oops, I slipped Arrrr!"
This tactic can work on conquest maps also. Instead of dropping all 6 people into one base to get the flag, the pilot can fly to each neutral flag at the start of the game and one person can jump off per flag, or more as needed for tough flags. It's really sweet to see all of the flags turn in your favor less than one minute and thirty seconds into the game.
I would advise that unless you have a team that is fully trained to do this, that you do not try to develop your skill on a public server with a bunch of strangers. A lot of people frown upon this (and other stunts like this) when you take a plane and strap people on the wings. But if you learned this on a private server, and you can do it really well, then by all means go for it! Give this tactic a try the next time you have time, and you might find out that yes indeed there IS a troop carrier plane in the game, it just looks like a fighter plane. ^_^
We can all hope for a true troop carrier plane in a future expansion pack though )
so has anyone tried this out?
