I just read this article. wonder if anyone else has?

Wingsurfing
By Mr. Teamwork

Insane pastime of mentally broken soldiers, or valid battlefield tactic?

Today I would like to talk about 'Wingsurfing'. Sound's interesting, yes? Some of you might already know what Wingsurfing is, but for those of you who have not had the pleasure of viewing it, it's when someone jumps on the wing of a plane - then the plane takes off, thus it sort of looks like 'surfing' on the wing. 99% of the time this results in a unfortunate fall to the unforgiving earth below, but to the brave few who have taken up this action, it's become a valid (though some say cheap) tactic. I have seen this personally, and joined in on a bunch of players who like to try new things no matter the cost. And what I have seen them do is nothing short off amazing.

"Look Mamma I can fly!
On a few occasions I've have seen people load up SIX passengers (yes six!) on the wing of a plane, and with them all being buddies and knowing what to do and when, they fly over to the enemy base in a CTF game - and drop out SEVEN troops (Remember the pilot as well)! Quite a devastating 'shock force' less than a minute into the match, eh?. The key to this is the pilot - he or she must know the plan, and fly not as a fighter pilot, but as a cargo plane pilot. From takeoff, all members of this shall we say, 'Band of others' must go prone and face towards the front of the plane. Then the pilot needs to take off, but instead of shooting up into the sky, he/she must fly at a very low (and this is the critical part) level. But there are other hazards, if the pilot goes 15 degrees to high or low will result in the dumping of the passengers and thus creating red blobs of ex-soldiers on the ground. But the guys on the wing are not totally helpless. They can do one thing to keep themselves on the wing, which is tap forward every two seconds (or as needed) to keep themselves as close to the middle of the wing as possible. But if the pilot is good, and understands his/her role in this little raid, they will not have to do any correcting! The motto for this rather insane tactic is 'Low and level!'

"I seen em'"
The several times I have seen this done (and I was on the wing twice!), we were accused of cheating right away, with people saying what we did was 'impossible'. And as you can imagine they weren't so nice about voicing there objections. But back to the topic at hand, and here's the kicker, if the team is really good the 6 guys can jump off over the enemy base, while the pilot stays in the air. While the guys are floating down to the flag, the pilot fly's around and actually lands the plane as close to the flag pole as possible! One person gets the flag, and the others cover him/her from all the leftover troops in the enemy base! (Most are gone because they are rushing for your flag!) It's helpful to have one medic on the team, and the flag carrier should be a medic as well. Then the pilot either A: Gives up his plane to the flag runner, or B: The flag runner gets back on the wing, and they both fly home! You might ask, "But Mr. Teamwork, for the love of humanity, what about the 5 guys left behind in the enemy base? I thought the motto was 'We all go home!!!'". Well fear not, for they are in the process of hiding in the enemy base, so when the flag is capped or somehow returned, they can grab it again and try a jeep or tank run home! When this works (and with a well-trained team it works most of the time!) this is a really great strategy. It gets you a quick cap, AND it 'breaks' the enemy spirit to fight as well.

"Oops, I slipped Arrrr!"
This tactic can work on conquest maps also. Instead of dropping all 6 people into one base to get the flag, the pilot can fly to each neutral flag at the start of the game and one person can jump off per flag, or more as needed for tough flags. It's really sweet to see all of the flags turn in your favor less than one minute and thirty seconds into the game.

I would advise that unless you have a team that is fully trained to do this, that you do not try to develop your skill on a public server with a bunch of strangers. A lot of people frown upon this (and other stunts like this) when you take a plane and strap people on the wings. But if you learned this on a private server, and you can do it really well, then by all means go for it! Give this tactic a try the next time you have time, and you might find out that yes indeed there IS a troop carrier plane in the game, it just looks like a fighter plane. ^_^

We can all hope for a true troop carrier plane in a future expansion pack though )

so has anyone tried this out?

Haen't done it in a ranked server yet. and don't have the Screen shot anymore but i have done it in a priate server with 20 friends. (though only 8 actually manages to stay on the week after a few hundred feet into the air and i will explain why shortly.)

Probably the easiest map to do this on is kubra damn USMC side. Because the fighter plane hanger has a ladder into it that you don't ave have to sprint jump to land onto the fighter with. Anyway what the above quote doesn't explain is why you have to be prone and stay as close to center as possible.

The reason is that when the airplane takes off the game immediatly thinks you are freefalling. now your freefall speed is at max about a qaurter of the jets cruise speed (cruise speed is about 1000 this is just flying straight and level with no afterburner) Thus first off if you have never done halo jumping in bf2 i suggest you try. The arrow keys do nothing in a halo jump instead the way you have your body facing and your head if you hit the prone key then look straight up you will travel quit far and distance. I'll give ya an example from 500 feet off of the USMC base in kubra you can halo out of a helo and land at the uncapable US base (abandon huts i believe is the name) and the only time your chute will be open is for about the last 10 feet of the jump. so anyway use this techhnique when riding the jet this will maxmise your characters air speed.

anyway because the game thinks you are free falling not riding the jets wing normal physical don't apply so unlike real life your not traveling at the same speed as the jet or atleast the game doesn't think you are. so you want to stay as close to the center of the wing because otherwise you will literally fall thru the airraft. (if you are to near an edge or the center mass of the jet you will literally fall thru it as if it didn't exist.)

you can also use this trick for riding on helos but it is different because there are only a few "hard points" where you can ride and wont fall thru at.

anyay the trick is to lazy prone liik at about a 15 degree angle up into the air and keep yourself as close to the center of the wing as possible.

-----------

Now for my story of why 20mpeople got on and only 8 remained. well i told you how to do it above do you really think 10 people were able to stay prone center mass of a US fighter? Hell no only 4 on either wing were. and one person manage to stay between the tale fins for a while then he flew off.

You're trying to say looking down will INCREASE your descent speed. I think that's what you're trying to say correct? While looking upwards when falling will DECREASE your descent speed therefor allowing you to travel further since you remain in the air for a longer period of time.

yes the trick he bf2 haloinn in this if you look striaght done you will basically travel almost straight down if you look up your body will be basically prone in the air moing straight forward. so if you look up you trael till you are over your landing zone and then you look down  and open the shoot a feww feet of the ground.

in the case of the wing surfing it just helps because it makes the game think you are "falling" faster horizonatally and thus can tick with the jet easier.

....Funny game mechanics and all.

If you think thats pointless you should play more on the air maps. I've seen an 8 man crew take over 6 points on kubra 64 player map very quickly (in ranked not the xample i gave above.) by ust haloing off the wing close to a flag. if you hav a pilot that knows the trick as well as how to land a jet you can continaully have fast paces halo jumps that the enemy never knows where it's coming from.

mixx that in with reliable ground/pounders and armor for actually defending points and you have a very potent team.

I've done this before and the admins banned us, it was on the North American Alliance servers.

They said we were cheating, I said they were "wrong and I can do whatever the game physics allows me to" and got banned promptly for "Cheating and voicing stupid opinion" (Exact words).
Alpha as fuck.

LOL gotta love admins who will not tolerate something THEY don't like. There's not enough swear words in the english dictionary to properly describe how I feel about getting killed by a GL from an assault, but I yell and scream only to myself because even though *I* think it's cheesy, I must agree with the fact that it is part of the game and is NOT a cheat, no matter how much of an advantage they have over someone who doesnt know how to use it (like me). It should be common knowledge that anything the game allows you to do "technically" shouldn't be considered a cheat no matter how bizzarre it is.
