hmmm...pretty one-sided statement given the fact that games would not be were they are at right now if it were not for the 30 and even 40-something crowd. Contrary to popular belief that the "younger" crowd is driving game sales, the big money making hits and "game of the year" awards are going to Mature rated games or sports titles. Why? First off, we were the pioneers for everything you see today. Game developers KNOW that the ol' skool OG's (Original Gamers) have grown up and are looking for content that is more adult and cators to their tastes. Gran Theft Auto's Vice City and San Andreas took place in time periods that today's teens and young adults can't even relate because they were either not alive or only 4 years old. I am in my mid-30s and I completely loved those games because it put me in the 'way-back' machine about what I was doing in my life during the time. Nostalgia heaven.
Console games sales boil down to shooters and sports games. After a 10 year run, fighting games have waned in popularity (finally). For 2004, here were the big sellers:

Note that there are 3 Mature rated games and 4 sports titles (no...Need for Speed does not count).
In terms of PC games, there are 4 big genres are 1st Person shooters, Real-time Strategy, Simulations (including flight and racing), with MMORPGs becoming a major force. In 2004, we had Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft, Far Cry, The Chronicles of Riddick - Butcher Bay, Unreal Tournament '04, PainKiller, City of Heros, Doom 3, Warhammer 30,000 - Dawn of War, Rome: Total War, The Sims, Rise of Nations.
7 Mature Titles.
This year? Battlefield 2, F.E.A.R, Quake 4, GTA: SA, Call to Duty 2, Fable, Prince of Persia, Civilization IV, Sims 2, World of Warcraft (again), Vampire: the Masquerade, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, and probably more. However, of these well known hits, the majority of them are again, Mature Titles.
The bottom line, if you think that these game developers are making video and pc games aimed at 15 and 16 year olds, you have not been taking a look at what is selling on the shelves. Of course, they also hope that these Mature Rated games make it into the hands of minors for some extra sales, but still...they don't really have them in mind when designing the game. Mature Rated games sell with the only exception being the Sims because women are playing that in significant amounts.
