The report, drawn up by a team of respected academics, claims that Britain is a world-leader in the use of surveillance technology and its citizens the most spied-upon in the free world.

It paints a frightening picture of what Britain might be like in ten years time unless steps are taken to regulate the use of CCTV and other spy technologies.

aren't there more than a few of the larger cities with pedestrian surveillance cams and face recognition software over there? I can kind of understand national capitols or the immediate vicinity of sensitive areas like the CDC in atlanta, but an entire city being watched seems a lil overboard

I've just finished reading 'Brave New World' by Aldous Huxley. How long will it be before human beings are born in hatcheries and conditioned to become alphas, betas, gammas, delta or epsilon class human beings??

With the amount of resistance that the government has had to the idea of ID cards, I very much doubt that people in the UK will be getting chips put in them.

On the street in London you are on camera a lot of the time and there are many speciallised surveilance technologies in use. At home however there are stringent EU privacy laws, which protect people from being spied upon. Just because there is a large amount of CCTV over here doen't mean our privacy is invaded, it just helps fight crime.

I don't see the problem with this.  If you're not doing anything wrong - apart from breaking the speed limit in a motor vehicle, I don't - what have you got to fear?  There's a police CCTV camera in the street parallel to mine and two on the main road, either end of my estate, and they don't bother me at all.  If they serve to reduce crime, good.  I really couldn't give a toss if the cops knew where I was, 24/7.

I believe the US is going to be requiring the use of RFID laden ID cards "universal ID cards" in by May of 2008.  This is how the US will slowly go towards a bio-tech version into the body soon..then all humans will be lojacked..and the biblical prophesy that no man will be able to buy or sell unless they have the number of the beast.  **noting the above posted scripture**  But hey, the bible is just the writings of a crazy man...he was just lucky this time...

I remember some crazy religious folks in the early 90's talking about this even going as far as saying that in europe (of course) there was a computer called "BEAST" which manages such RF data.

Apparently our currency will all have rfid's in them so as to track every paper note made...lots of good futuristic things to look forward to!  All hail the new world order!  Bush Sr. will have his dream come true!

Onstar is in many new cars.  It can tell where you are (your car anyway) at any time.  It can even track how often you stop at a particular shopping mall.

yeah, I'm guessing that the number of the best isn't even 666.  It is said among some biblical scholars who have carefully examined John's writing style that have suggested he has a number dyslexia problem..similar to the kind children have who write numbers and some letters in mirror image.  So it's probably "999."

The number of the beast used to be 666 but then the number of phones increased massively over the years, and the phone companies kept re-numbering... so now its a 14 digit ex-directory number only know to his closest friends.

You said it bets man.  I dont do anything that causes me to worry if I am going to get caught or not.  I dont really care if the police/FBI can watch me take my daily mile run.  I dont really care if they watch me drive to work.  To me, its no big deal.  If those cameras help keep places safer, then so be it.  Most of the people who are getting mad about it, are either paranoid people who think the government is out to get them, or people that are doing things that are wrong such as breaking into places, destroying city property, dealing drugs, whatever...

I dont see what the big fuss is about if cities such as Indianapolis, and other large cities did start installing them.  Same goes for the government listening in on phone conversations.  The government doesnt care that your telling your friend how you cheated on your wife.  They pay attention to stuff like "bomb", "terrorism", "kill the president" and so on.  I think people take this stuff to a certain level of severity that is blown out of proportion.  That is my opinion on it anyway.

It's the point that we're entering more and more each day a POLICE STATE where all the basic freedoms are reduced and eliminated step by step until they're gone.  A lazy and complacent society like ours just lets it happen.  Look at the last two presidential elections..both easily prosecutable..but doing it is impossible.  Now we do as frank and aardfrith say and just compromise loss of freedom by saying to just not break laws and we'll have nothing to worry about...all the while, the machine is tighting it's grip around our necks.

I will cite the butchered quote of Franklin and say that giving up security for freedom means you deserve neither and will lose both.

Even after they introduce gas chambers for the people who get caught without a chip?

As it happens, most Britons (probably most people in the Western World) could have their whereabouts traced right now.  Everybody I know - my friends, relatives and work colleagues, even my neighbours that are supposedly on the breadline and claiming benefit - carries a mobile phone with them.  Using current technology, these can pinpoint a person's location, assuming they have their mobile phone with them.  This company http://www.verilocation.com/HowItWorks.aspx claims to be able to track a phone's location to within 5 metres.  And there's several websites on Google that offer similar services.

You are confusing two different services (but several of these companies muddy the water to make it look like they can do more...)

They can (given the licenses, and permissions) tell the location of any UK mobile to its current cell.

The down to 5 meters version is reliant on the device being GPS enabled and support the ability for remote parties to query this (so no need for all you GPS users to panic!)

I've used the O2 location services for mobile cell location already. However all the mobile providers were working on expanding this service to triangulate between you current active cell and the neighboring cells to work out a much better location - the accuracy of this depends on cell size and density (i.e. you can be pinpointed in London way better than out in the country). However I haven't heard of this being actually available and believe due to the falling price of the GPS option (which will always be more accurate) it may have been totally canned.
