the 1911(most automatic handguns today are derived in one way or another from the 1911A1) is not meant to be shot from the side mount. we tried it at my shooting range for shits and giggles. the semi auto will NOT cycle rounds from that position.
and for everyone talking about FFL's....just a side note. i shoot with and make knives(my main occupation) ex SF guys. a greent beret, an old delta guy like really old-vietnam era, and a cat that used to work for the government and has never been very specific about what he ever did although he has the same look as the other two. anyway along their trips through the military they picked up ALOT of not so legal firearms. since i make knives for them and shoot with them i have become rather good friends with them. whenever i feel like it, well thats not true it has to be on saturday mornings at about 8:30 before the range opens. but if i call them during the week i can have basically whatever the hell i want to shoot at the range on saturday morning. i would like to do this more than i already do, but im married and as all gun owners will know(excluding people that only own .17's or .22's) ammunition is niether cheap nor free. so money limits me on my shooting. but my point here is that they OWN between them over two hundred fully automatic firearms. they each have a FFLIII license so if you want to own military weapons, you may but it wil cost you ALOT of money........
side note-some of the guns they own that i have been lucky enough to shoot.
glock 18 with 50 round beta mag
FN P90
all the russians-kalishnikov variants, assault, carbine, LMG
M60, the old one with the crap feeding tray
thompson with the stick mag(personal favorite though it requires expensive .45 rounds to cycle correctly)
uzi blah crap gun
MP5
UMP
vektor-MP5 variant chambered for 5.56(too small of a body for that large of a round)
M1 garand, carbine, 14
theres more but i cant think of em right now...got some video of the full auto glock just cant figure out how to get it on here......anyway, you guys have a good one.
