I really think much of the anti-global warming thing comes from the mismarketing of global warming. As you said, it can come off as being Chicken Little in its sentiment. Movies like "The Day After Tomorrow" didn't help this image any.
Yet, it's sad how marketing can obscure truth. Global warming really is happening, with regards to the rise in the average annual temperature of the Earth. That's really the core of this discussion. As ocean temperatures gradually rise over years, there will be a gradual rise in the sea level.
Some people underestimate the effect this will have on life by stating that people will simply adapt, but you have to remember -- these kinds of adaptations aren't easy. We can't even build suitable levees for New Orleans today, much less ones that could handle higher ocean levels.
The goal should be to slow what's already occurring. It's not a reason to panic, but it should be reason for action. It's kind of similar to the War on Terror, actually. Unfortunately, it also resembles the War on Terror in that it isn't being fought correctly at the moment.....
