I'm not gonna bash 2142- I like playing it. But there's things that really frustrate me;

The weapons sound&look nice...but they somehow never truly feel powerful. The problem i experience here is that it takes me too long to kill someone, wheras when that person turns around I'm dead. for clarification, I'm not a noob, I'd like to consider myself the average bf player, and so I'm very familiar with this effect as this happened countless of times in BF 2 as well...but it's even more frustrating in the demo.

The point is, the infantry gameplay has a strange feel to it, also thanks to the anti-pronespamming feature that i can't come to grips with. Why should I lose a battle because I drop to the floor and start shooting, then want to relocate and find I can't return fire for what seems like a very precious second - an all the while the enemy is standing there with his support gun, turns around, and takes away my heavy armor and 100% health in an amazingly lucky(?) spray.

I just can't understand the crosshair as it moves closer and further (indicating accuracy, yes i know). If its so far apart for me when walking, shouldnt it be as far apart for them, a Support guy turning around?

My problem is that I'm losing far too many 1 on 1 infantry battles, when I used to be pretty good at this in BF 2. I run out of a clip amazingly fast, and while I may have done 3/4 damage...the enemy, whether clan member or (apparant) noob can take me out with 1 clip. (no matter what gun...and I really hate that SMG)

So what's the technique here? Besides camping corridors in the Titan?

I have found that a little as well, but not as much as you seemingly have. I dont think there is any real technique to killing - i think you just have to get used to the weapons and soldier movements. Once you do that you'll be set. I have gone from getting totalled by the support troops, to killing them with a few sprays from the engineer's smg.

I get the same problem sometimes. Some rounds I totally own and other rounds I can't hit a thing and they are only a few meters in front of me!

Put the lay down command on the 2nd mouse key, and the secondary wepon funktion on F. Since i use that sontroll, I win most of the 1 to 1 situations, even if the enemy shoots from behind.

LionEyez, I share your frustration to a certain extent. I consider myself to be a complete BF2-grunt. Of my nearly 74.000 kills, infantry combat accounts for 74%.

I'm still having a hard time watching how I crouch in BF2142, fire bursts with my SCAR-11 or Krylov and still get mowed down by some support guy who just presses the trigger of his LMG until the weapon overheats.

Tbh though, I think the main "bad" thing about BF2142 infantry combat is that it is so completely different from that in BF2. While in BF2, you could just jump to prone position and your weapon was usually accurate enough to at least inflict some serious damage on the enemy almost straight away, BF2142 is a tad more realistic in that matter. If you're moving quickly, your breath goes faster, your blood pressure rises. It'll take you a second to fully recover from this, even if you're a well-trained and physically fit soldier.

I think - and experienced - though, the appropriate response might be a more careful approach. More than in BF2, you have to move quickly from cover to cover, look around and move on when you're sure the area is clear. Also, start to use single shot with the assault rifle. If you're crouching and using the scope and single shot, these weapons are amazingly accurate and lethal.

All in all, this new (or at least different) style of infantry combat is definitely a matter of personal likes and dislikes. Some will find it annoying, others will say "go play America's Army if you want realism" - while I'm well aware of the irony of speaking about "realism" in a game about a fictional future.
From my current state of recently found enthusiasm and excitement about the new game BF2142 is after 15 months of BF2, I have to say though I like it. I think it'll enforce squad playing and the usage of some more or less serious tactics like flanking, fire cover and stuff like that.
Of course I might change my opinion after playing the game for a reasonable amount of time, but right now I think it is at least fresh and exciting.

I miss the hit indicator from BF2, this new one doesn't catch my eye.

I know... I've found the guns just a tad underpowered in 2142... I mean... a full clip is usually more than enough to blow away two people in BF 2, now I'm often concerned about blowing my whole clip on a single guy.  And I think the prone delay is just to prevent people from the excessive dolphin diving/bunny hopping prevalent in BF 2.

And I get too much lag... but then again, that's to be expected when I barely meet most of the minimum specs and my video card isn't even listed (NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 vs. a minimum 5600, and even then for some reason it only works on one server).

The funny thing is, about half an hour after I posted this topic I did one of my best rounds in 2142 so far. Largely thanks to a Walker but there was some corridor fighting in the end...though it still feels like my accuracy has a certain randomness to it. I get now that you kind of have to sneak-crouch when you suspect enemies near, but the obvious flaw being that you develop tunnel-vision, focusing on corridor 3 when the enemy simply walks around to any of the other corridors for example.

I dunno, it still feels like I'm just lucky when I kill someone, as opposed to better tactics or whatever. I'll admit that 2142 has more advanced squad dynamics (I'm telling all my squad leaders to give us orders, kills within this radius scores you more points after all) and I generally go along with whatever the majority of my squad is doing, be that attacking/defending the titan or capturing silo's.

There's a steeper learning curve here than I expected. Such as using scopes/alternating firing modes...heck theres even an element of suppression fire in BF now (on board the titan anyway, yknow, those support guys that randomly shoot the corner just to let you know they're there..)

And yes...the hit indicator is something to get used to. I've made mine bright purple though, so at least it stands out.

Remember that this is a *New* game. I is supposed too feel different. It's like me complaining about COD2 because it isn't like BF2.

BTW I noticed that you can also get a "Squad kill assist +1 bonus" in addition to the normal kill assist. When you squad m8 does the kill. I might be wrong tho.

Shoot them in the knee-caps, they go down quicker that way, then bodyshots.

No body armour on the knees you see, sounds daft but it does work.

I'm not sure about AR's, but for LMG's, the longer you fire (trigger), the more accurate the weapon becomes. For the SMG, Spray and pray works well. There's not much deviation for 2142 weapons it seems. I don't like the assault rifles yet- and that's probably because I haven't figured out how to use them correctly. Like the above poster said, forget all you know about bf2. This game is different.

Run and gun is no longer a good strategy. I was frustrated in the begining, but after several hours on the demo I've learned that its all about giving your sights time to contract to get maximum accuracy. And of course, always aim for the head + short bursts(unless your support).

Apparently most guns get more accurate as you fire them more, and prone-iron sights-mow them down no longer works as well.  Time to unlearn your BF 2 reflexes.

I've noticed no real need to change my playing style. I'm still ending up in the top 5-10 people on the servers. Gotten 3 stars (one gold and one bronze, I can't remember what the third was) in my 3 hours of play.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

Its not a BF2 mod as some people claimed, you really need to learn to play again.
