Well, I just got my raptors setup.  Unfortunately i didnt test my old setup of the 7200 sata 3g's in raid.

HD Tach results for the 32mb test:

Raid 0, 36GB 16mb Raptors, 129.6 MB/s average  4% cpu usage
Standalone 250GB WD 3g 16mb, 53.0 MB/s  0% cpu usage

An interesting tid bit is the chart for the raptor held up until the last few gb... the chart for the 250gb sata started dropping faster about half way through, at 130gb.

HD Tach can be downloaded here..

There seems to be way too much misinformation on this board reguarding harddrives.. so lets get some good hard facts started!

Oh, just post the average..  who cares about burst speeds

My o/s backup drive for fun:

80GB Seagate IDE, ST380021A, 7200RPM,  37.3 MB/s, 2% Cpu usage

I have 2 identical 160GB 16mb Maxtor PATAs

47.2Mb/sec, 2%CPU

Mine steadily got worse, however ther were places where it dropped like a rock and came right back up again.

My 1GB USB flash drive put out an impressive 8.1Mb/sec with 19%CPU

On a side not I am looking for a good external SATA HD. My mobo has an external SATA connection I would like to take advantage of. I already have one 500 GB Lacie HD but it's firewire..yuck.

Any ideas? I want at least a 500GB.

My 400 gig:

is faster than my 74gig Raptor in average read speed:

Heh.

I have a 250gb too, but it's just a normal drive.

As for RAID -- kinda seems like a waste of money. Sure it's fast, but fast enough to be worth spending an extra $180 on another Raptor? Not really. Rather spend the money on something else (like extra storage). I have my eye on 5 x 320 gig right now.

mmm... Raid5 on a decent controller (with 512 MB of memory) 4 120GB seagate PATA disks:
writethrough of 130MB/s, dropping to an average of around 90 after the memory is consumed (presumably). Not bad IMO.
I wish I could get this kind of controller for SATA disks !

Hmm... so why's mine so slow? It's a SATA 150 drive and I tested it ages ago with Sandra and that gave much better results... I didn't shut down any of the myriad of things I have running, could that be it?

Try defragging first everyone.

fragmentation is not the problem - I keep all my partitions defragged... I'll try it again from a different install of windows (I did this from my 'work' install where, as I said, I have a myriad of things (eg. trillian, outlook, norton, skype, vss, ...) all running) - I'll try again from my BF2 (minimal background processes) install and post the results from there later...

That shouldn't matter. It's not reading a specific file.

well, I tried it in my bf2 install and:

https://img90.imageshack.us/img90/874/hdtach2dv3.jpg

and then I thought I'd try the long test, instead of the quick one, and:

So I guess the lesson is that Hitachi Deskstars aren't the best of drives...

If you have it yes, thanks for caring.

I s'pose, if you have to have the best.

Not enough performance for the price to tempt me though.
