I've been really busy for the past few weeks with work, moving into a new place and various other crap. This is the first weekend I've actually had some free time to myself, got my new cable connection installed, ready for a few hours quality time with BF2. Installed the 1.4 inremental patch and noticed some severe graphics corruption. So, for about the millionth time I re-installed my nvidia drivers and did a fresh install of BF2 with the full 1.4 patch - now the damn thing won't even start at all. The screen goes black for a couple of seconds then I get dumped to desktop.

It's a great game to play, but I'm getting so sick of this shit - I've never had so many problems with a game in over 10 years of PC gaming. I'm having serious doubts about whether I should hand over money for 2142 if it's going to be this much of a pain in the arse.

I´ve had the same problem, the only thing to do is uninstall and re install... As simple as that... Don´t remeber what i did exactly, but i think i updated my grapich drivers, and after that i had exactly the same problem.

Same happened once when i updated the soundcard drivers btw...

Make sure you remove the game from your registry also.  I had an issue with that at one time.  Remove it from the registry after you un-install it, then re-install.

This game is badly designed (not in terms of game play). Can you recreate similar behavior with any other game?

Do you have you username/password in your command line? If so try taking them out to rule out a network issue.

dxdiag turn out ok?

Going to try another completely clean install to see if that fixes the problem, otherwise I guess I'll need to speak to EA tech support.

Jsnipy - I'm reasonably technical about hardware and stuff, I spent a long time working as a writer for computing magazines, mostly doing reviews of consumer tech products, so I'm fairly confident that  my system is set up OK. I've got all the latest drivers for my hardware, I've cleaned out any possible spyware, viruses or other problems, there's nothing unusual about my system configuration. That's why this stuff is so annoying - I'm not an idiot, I know what I'm doing with PCs, and I still can't get this damn game to run with any real level of stability.

i wasn't implying as such ... in that case have you tried monitoring for registry/filesystem anomlies (using regmon, filemon from www.sysinternals.com), the game seems bad exception handling (supressive). You might be able to find the culprit .. i.e. a an error reading a certain offset from a file, etc.

Also, have you confident system is not getting hot?

Jsnipy - crossed wires there I think, I wasn't being uppity with you - just saying that it's ridiculous that somebody with relatively solid technical know-how can't make this game work properly.

Look mate - this has been covered heaps allready - try a clean install with the FULL 1.4 Patch, & TURN OFF your firewall.

doing this has fixed ALL these problems on my machine. all the connection issues and CTD's was caused by zonealarm. I also installed the latest nvidia drivers before the clean install...

yeah im sorry, im pre-caffinated. Ur correct, it shouldn't be this way with pc games. For as much as people pick on UnrealTournement2k4, its a very stable, very well designed game.

I guess BF2 is under the strain of EA's market driven dev cycles

That may well be the case, but like I said, I've been busy recently and this is the first opportunity I've had to bitch about it.

I feel your pain, Lbrain.  I'm pretty computer savvy myself, both on the hardward and software side.  Been playing pc games since the mid 90s...never ever have I run into such a piece of software that is a completely picky bitch as BF2.  I currently have it running tip top on my newer rig...gave up on my old one running it though.  The only advise I can give is continue with the trial and error form of re-installing...you will eventually get it back.  There are a couple of simple quirks that usually cause the crap we've all experienced.  Try starting with badhq's posted guide (stickied) in the BF2 section.  Good luck.
