Sup guys;)
Alright, bf2142 looks l33t as hell, and I'm planning on saving up to buy a new video card for both that and bf2, so I can run at 1152x864, 4x aa, and the highest possible fsaa. Here's my current specs:

DFI lanparty nf4 Ultra-d (bios?)
AMD Opteron 165 toledo
Corsiar TWINX2048-4000pt 2x1 GB DDR 500(PC 4000)@ddr400
eVGA 7800 gt co
x-fi xtrememusic
WD WD2500KS 250 gig SATA
Nec ND-3550A 16x8x16x DVD+R/RW IDE
OCZ Powerstream 520w with adjustable power rails
Windows XP professional w/SP2

I can currently run bf2 with everything except aa off. Bf2 looks alright now, but when I had my 7900 gt co that I gave away to a friend, I noticed about a 30% descrease in visual quality when I began using my replacement 7800 gt co, which, for some stupid reason, can only run in the pci-x 2x slot:/ Also, with both my x-7900 gt co and my currently 7800 gt co, bf2 runs around 40 fps. I rarely get a smooth, consistent 60+ fps, which I truly desire, as it would make the graphics a LOT better looking (read: one solid, moving picture instead of this subtly blurry 40 fps crap).

So my plan is to save until december, when I can afford the $500 7950 gx2. I'm sure that card can meet the desired graphics I want(will my 1.8 ghz opteron be a bottleneck making this untrue?), but it's pretty darn expensive.

My question to you guys is are there any other cards that I should be looking at to attain my gaming goals? I've been out of the hardware game for some time now, and I would like to get a few heads up:p

Thank you for your help, it is MUCH appreciated, THANK YOU!!!

your processor is way slow. processors are a VERY VERY large part of the game. for instance: i tested two identical HP computers, both had windows XP, 2 gigs of ram, and a 7600 GS. the difference is, one had a 3000+ and the other had a 3800+. i can run on all high 4xAA 1024x786 and get about 30 fps on the 3000+. on the 3800+ i run the exact same settings, only i get 60 fps average. big. big. difference.

I was able to run the beta, everything on highest setting with an X1800 XT 512MB. If you do not care about other games, get whatever you want (ATI's X1900 and Nvidia's 7900 are good candidates). But if you can run BF2 pretty well already, i would wait with the upgrade, as the ones before me said, there are soon DX10 cards, which will be a requirement at one point to play the games.

BF2142 does not require DX10, it doesnt profit from it once its out either. Also it does not support any physics processor. So take your pick

Dag, the problem with that is I can only afford a hot new graphics card OR a hot new cpu. So I have to choose wisely. Contrary to you're example and general belief, firingsquad.com did a HUGE comparison of dual-core processors to single core processors involving everything from cod2, Quake 4, battlefield 2, and much more. The results showed that when you crank up the graphics settings, the game becomes much more gpu dependant than cpu dependant, and dual-core processors did as well as single cores in those games. I can't seem to find the link, but here's another showing exactly this with q4: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/qua … page4.asp. I'm still trying to find the link, as it was so important that I based my cpu purchase on it and similiar cpu reviews:p

Sup stryyker, Simon Moon:)
Hey, when will the dx10 cards come out? I'll google it and see if I can find out:p I don't think I wanna wait more than 3 months to get better graphics, cuz that's MONTHS of missing bf's graphics potential. That's how I see it anyway, hehe;) Will the first dx10 cards be more powerful than say, a 7950 gx2?

Hey Simon Moon,
I had a 7900, but it was the gt version, with only 256 mb ram. So maybe that's why I didn't get the same results as you did? hehe;) Did you get an absolute smooth 60+ fps in all situations with your x1800 xt 512 mb card? That's a big thing I'm looking for:) Another thing to consider too is the bf2142 beta as action-filled(lots of on-screen action) as bf2 is? That'll help me gauge my options better:p Also, what's your setup; what cpu you have?

Thanks for your helpful responses guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are really looking to make a change now, i'd go for a 7900 GT for bf2142 and then go for a DX10 card when its out. A 7900 GT only runs about $250 so its not a huge price for a good temporary card.

l33t:) What cpu you have? I can run bf2 with everything set on maxed with both my 7900 gt and my 7800 gt, difference is, bf2 "optimizes" the shaders, which to me means it lowers the video quality regardless of how high you make the settings, depending on how strong your system is. In the end, I noticed a visual descrease in quality between my 7900 gt and 7800 gt, so different cards may be able to run bf2 at max, but it still depends on how good it looks afterwords:p

Sorry, but thats not right.

If u got 30 FPS in a game (with those hardware) u cant double the framerate only by CPU power. Thats impossible! - especially in high quality mode.
The framerate difference between 3000+ and 3800+ is maybe 3-5 FPS not more - up to your graphic quality.
(With low quality u get a higher difference)

For high framerates, the GPU power is much more important than the CPU power - IMOH thats a fact.
(The GPU is responsibly for the graphic; the CPU mainly(!) for other processes (e.g. physik))

BTW: BF2 or 2142 does not support 64Bit or dual CPU cores - u dont get any advanteges of this technology.

I also say: wait for DirectX10 Cards! I reckon they are mabye out in 6 month.

AMD 64 3000+
1 gig DDR400 RAM. (Going 2 soon)
7600gt 256mb GDDR3 580/1500

It looks good enough for me ingame

LOL I second that Tyler.

And he's not exaggerating a bit, the taxes are 90%.

That's why I'm kinda confused. It *seems* like ppl with lower specs than I get better fps than me, lol:p

Will the 7950 GX2 be able to run DX10?

They say it's Vista ready.  Whatever that means

Mannn, game developers BETTER not shit us over by making games dx10 only during the transitional stage, or even a LIL after that eh!

Watcha think?

Well, as far as I understand it, DX9 cards will be able to run DX10 games but won't be able to take advantage of DX10s features

Personally I'm gettin the 7950 GX2, there aren't many games coming out in the near future that I really have my eyes on.  If I could play CS-Source, DoD-Source, CoD2, BF2, and BF2142 with medium-high settings and no lag I'll be happy for a long time
