The car industry in the US has been steadily losing lots of money. General Motors and Ford are in no immediate danger of shutting down, but long term they are in serious trouble. GM and Ford stocks have both reached junk levels (GM reaching BB, the 2nd highest junk level - Ford reaching BB+, the highest junk level).

One of the most serious problems US car manufacturers face is that it is very difficult for them to sell their cars elsewhere around the world. Most US built cars do not reach emissions standards in other countries that would be ideal target markets. Arnie has been in trouble with the US car industry because of the introduction of legislation that will bring emissions standards in California up to the same levels as China currently has gradually over 11 years. Japan and Europe as well as many other countries have higher emissions standards than China. This inabilty to export the majority of cars produced in the US has hit the manufacturers hard, as have falling sales in the US.

Do these giants of the automobile industry have a future?

GM I am more than sure will adapt, Ford may take longer but will adapt.  Other smaller American vehicle makers, may well fall.  Ford and GM will have to slow down making the BFG (Big fucking Gasguzzlers) or they will go down the hole.

If they start to reduce their car's emissions I'd say they might have a future.

I have been under the impression that for some time now the Foreign and US manufacturers have been sort of morphing into one. Many of the subcontractors are local and foreign to. Am I not correct? I really have no first hand knowledge. Maybe the worlds smartest boy will cut and paste a few links on the subject for us. As only a true boy genius can.

I know that US companies own many foreign companies, but their profits are taken into account within the Ford/GM umbrella. Ford for example own Jaguar.

They haven't been morphing into them, just buying them.

GM and Ford are both doing well in Europe. GM has Vauxhall/Opel, Ford has itself, Jaguar, Land Rover. The problem with the US is that the cars designed soley for you are not particuarly good at MPG, which is a HUGE factor in what cars are bought in Europe. GM cars look cool, but they dont make their way into Europe (mainly because they're left hand drive, but Europeans want better build quality and great reliability, something which GM dosen't have in the US).

Labour in the US is more expensive than say Japan and China, so cars that are produced there cost less to buy. Although Ford and GM promote 'patriotism' by building their cars in the US the prices hit the consumers, so sales wont be as high as Toyota or Nissan (which is Infinity in America, I think).

If Ford and GM are to survive, particuarly in the US, they need to gain better build quality and promote their own brand cars to a wider audience at different prices and different needs.

By the way this is what I've just done in my Business A-Level coursework, and thankfully I got an A, so hopefully I know what Im talking about!

Mainly because they're left hand drive?

Britain is the only country in Europe that uses right hand drive cars.

I was saying from a UK perspective.....but you have to remember that the UK car economy is bigger than France , Germany and Spain (not together ofcourse).

hasnt ford already cut 25,000 jobs in the usa in a bit to cut costs??

ford is also considering selling aston martin and land rover because these are billion dollor companies and would help bring in much needed financial help....and i think those 2 companies should be bought back by british businessmen.

Did you know that the reason people drive on the right hand side of the road in the Uk comes from Jousting?

Well, before getting all high and mighty, re-read the initial post.  Nowhere did he say that America invented the internal combustion engine, nor did he claim that we invented even the automobile.  He stated that we started the industry.  Which, we did.

EDIT:

CameronPoe has a rather nationalistic reason for wanting the DeLorean back I might add.  Do a bit of research and find out where they were manufactured ...

I doubt it, but I do believe he knows quite well the answer - which is Ireland, yes.  The DeLorean was actually quite a good car, it was just rocked by too much politics and its creator suffered too many scandals.  Namely being accused of cocaine trafficing.

you may doubt it, but I don't - hence why I laughed at it..
