I have an ati radeon x1900xt graphics card, and i have all the settings on high and AA on 6X and i get crappy fps at times.  Average around 40-50.  Sometimes it's so low that game gets choppy.  Any advice on improving the fps in bf2?  Also, i'd figure that the fps would be really good with a good graphics card anyway.

My rig:

Ultra 600 watt xfinity 2g PSU
Asus P5LD2-VM Motherboard
4 sticks 512 mb aeneon ddr2 533 ram (2gb total)
Asus Ati radeon x1900xt
Western Digital 200 gb sata2 hard drive 7200rpm
Pentium 4 dual core 3.4ghz processor

IF you don't have to much to lose  I would re format your computer. You have a wicked system. First add windows .Second add your video drivers.Actually its time for me to reformat, you want to do it side bye side I'm good to go.PM meWe can do it together, soon though.

it's an overall slowdown or is it smooth with stuttering?

Try shutting down the crap programs in the background, AV, Firewall, etc.

i actually recently reinstalled windows/ reformatted.  that was about maybe 1- 1.5 months ago.

And pzerofgh, i will try to shut down even more programs than i already have and see if that helps.

and how often are you supposed to reformat your hard drive? i have around 30 percent of my hard drive used, 70 free.  also, i defragment my hard drive often too.  idk why this is happening.  could it be the RAM? i do have relatively cheap ram.

i had this same issue with my x1900xt

the quick fix: restart your system. if that fails, restart it again. never had to do it more than 1ce for me tho...should bring your fps back up to 85-100

the permanent fix: format and reinstall everything (as stated above)....i would've done this sooner, but i was missing my BF2 cd1, so i had to wait....also, wne i reinstalled, i didnt install hydrovision with the driver combo...i find it almost completely worthless, the windows dual-monitor panel is way better.

i'll try that if all else fails.  i really don't want to reformat lol.  i'm gonna scan for viruses/spyware also and delete temp files.  and if i reformat, should i do the quick option or the other one? what is the difference between the 2?

At what resolution are you running these maxed out settings?  Sorry, but even with an X1900XT you aren't going to run at 19??x14?? something resolution, with 6x AA and 16x AF, with all in-game settings maxed, and still get good frame rates.

You could change your 512 sticks to 1 gig sticks, more effecient, and who the heck needs 6x AA, how can you even notice the difference between 4 and 6 on that resolution. But main improvement i could think of would be to go from 512 sticks to 1 gig sticks, and check the rest of the tech section if ur unsure about specs.

true it is good to considate the chips down (for OCD purposes) but i doubt it would impact framerate.

Do you have tripple buffering on?  I don't know if the CCC or standard control panel give you this option, which is one of the reasons I  use ATi Tray Tools.  It does allow for tripple buffering, even in D3D based games, and on a per game basis.

Just a quick overview, tripple buffering helps hold up higher frame rates when the fps drops below the refresh rate.  When not using tripple buffering, and fps drop below the refresh rate, fps drop in multiples of the refresh rate.
