Is everyone aware the the towers were pretty shoddily constructed to begin with?
nice just what we needed, the truth in hard facts, now "the worlds smartest boy" will close this thread because he doesn't agree with its direction and results. Are you talking about "Loose Change"?
Sick of hearing about that bullshit that some internet rejects created.
Click here and you will feel like a moron if you believed that "Loose Change" garbage.
(Read the whole thing, not just the pictures)
For anyone interested in a point-by-point debunking of some of the most popular conspiracy theories out there (like the fact that steel melts at 1525° C, and although jet fuel burns only at 825° C, it doesn't have to burn hot enough to melt to cause the buildings to collapse, since steel loses 50% of its strength at 648 ° C)

I had just gotten off of nightshift, sitting in my living room drinking coffee. I was watching the Today Show when they cut to the building on fire and you saw the second plane hit.haffeysucks wrote:
Tomorrow will be the 5 year anniversary of September 11th. Will you ever forget? Where were you that day? What are you going to do tomorrow?
Discuss.
And today I am working. Day shift though.
I got told about it by the Niagara Falls border control guy on my way to Canada. I'd bought a book from a store in the WTC 3 days earlier. When I got back to NY a week later it looked like an entirely different city.
Is that why the 16,000 people below the impact got out?Ikarti wrote:

I was coming back from school when this just happened. I was terrified over a 3rd WW ... Because that was really frightening.
Now, I feel better about this. But what bothers me with this memorial, is that there's no memorial for those who died in a train station in Spain because of terrorists attacks. Is it because there were less people who died ? No ! There's no memorial for the tsunami in Asia in December 2004, where ~230.000 people died, against "only" ~2.800 in the WTC accident.
I'm then thinking that the WTC thing is so much important because it happened in America...
Be careful! I'm neither criticizing the commemoration of the WTC thing, nor do I don't feel sad about what happened.
I'm just thinking people in Europe / US speak too much about this when more people die elsewhere, and we don't speak about their as much horrible death. I can at least understand US guys to speak that much about this, but well...
That's why, I won't do anything different from other day for the 9/11 until we commemorate the tsunami, or other horrible events, though I still feel sad about these.

If they were "shoddily" constructed obviously most of them would have perished as well.Ikarti wrote:

My numbers were a little low also it was more around 25k.
I would hardly call it shoddy.

It appears that about 25,000 people safely exited the buildings, almost all of them from below the impact floors; almost everyone above the impact floors perished, either from the impact and fire or from the subsequent collapse. The structures of the buildings were heroic in some ways but less so in others. The buildings survived the impact of the Boeing 767 aircraft, an impact very much greater than had been contemplated in our design (a slow-flying Boeing 707 lost in the fog and seeking a landing field). Therefore, the robustness of the towers was exemplary. At the same time, the fires raging in the inner reaches of the buildings undermined their strength. In time, the unimaginable happened . . . wounded by the impact of the aircraft and bleeding from the fires, both of the towers of the World Trade Center collapsed.

My sister's birthday is 9/11. That day, she and her fiance were working in New Hampshire on this car show thing I did with her for a bit. My mom flew up there to take her into NYC to sight see and have dinner. I was supposed to go, but I couldn't raise the $500 in time.
I went to bed around 6 am on 9/11, as my sleeping schedule was pretty messed up at that time. I wake up around 4 and notice a message on the machine. It was my sister saying they never went into the city and they were ok. More messages from my mom's friends who knew she was supposed to be in NYC saying they heard what happened at the "World's Fair" (moron) and wanted to check on my mom. So, confused as hell, I turn on my computer and see the WTC with smoke coming out of it. I'm all like, "All this freaking hysteria over a fire in a skyscraper? I then turned on CNN or something and saw the full extent of it all.
Needless to say, my mom and sister couldn't get into NYC because taxi services weren't running @ 5 am their time. They were going to go later, but thankfully they didn't because if they did, they would've been at the WTC right when they fell.
So, my mom had to spend her vacation sitting in a hotel room watching tv, and couldn't come home for over a week because all the airports were shutdown.
Scary to believe that I could've been there when it happened. I knew people that were, but didn't like talking about it. Either it was too traumatic, or they got sick of everyone asking. One girl told me she was like 3 blocks from it when they fell. Luckily, she survived... but was a total bitch.

Which is why I'll usually specify dates as such: 'Mar 12, 1997', unless it's non-formal.Tyferra wrote:
I'll never forget. It's not the kind of thing you do. I still find it kind of unbelieveable.
It's already 9/11 here. Strange, all the Kiwi papers are making their Fifth Anniversary tribute front page bullshit today yet they're not noticing they've got the date wrong.
It happened on September 12 here!
Also they've got the date around the wrong way. Forever we've had the date the right way around, day/month/year, yet for some reason every eleventh of September it gets switched.
11/9/2001 becomes 9/11/2001.
It's bloody confusing. A New Zealand paper should report in a New Zealand way.
I'm sorry, but do you have a masters in civil engineering and 40 years of experience? That's my source, and I'm sticking with it.Kmarion wrote:

7/11, what's that some kind of shop?
Why do we want to be remembering that? Have they got a special offer on?
Much worse stuff than 9/11 has happened over recent years - like the Rwandan genocide in 1994, a million people hacked to death with machetes (well not all, some of them were shot, beaten to death etc.). That's much worse - no two ways about it.

No but I'm sure my souce did. Obviously you didn't click the link or you would have known I was quoting the lead structural engineer of the World Trade Center towers. What was your source again?Ikarti wrote:

They were not shoddily constructed. The innovations in the constructing allowed an open floor layout devoid of structural columns. The process of using the outer wall as the structural backbone was prity innovative IMO. The mistakes in the construction came from the way the steelwork was fireproofed with spray on in-tumescent paint instead of the usual concrete enclosure. The impact of the planes blew this coating off in places exposing the steel work allowing it loose its structural strength. The steel floor lattes connectors failed and the floors came down on each other like a pack of cards. The Twin towers were an example of engineering innovation up until they were struck. But I'm sure the engineers never envisioned, like the rest of us, that 747's would fly into the towers at full speed. So I don't think they are to blame for them coming down. Blame the guys flying the planes not the guys who designed the targets.Ikarti wrote:
