OK, so my X800PRO is giving up and I am going to build my new rig.

I had been thinking of Athlon 64 X2 4200+, 2Gb RAM and here comes the real deal for gamers (we are gamers, right?): is it going to be a couple of X1900 on crossfire or a single kicka$$ X1950? or something different?

I want something to max out all settings within BF2 and be ready for the - most likely - higher requirements of BF2142. I am, playing on a Philips 19" LCD (i.e. 1280x1024 max)

Please help me choose all the right stuff...

currently running: Coolergiant 535W, ASUS P4P800, P4 3.0Ghz, 2x512MbCORSAIR+2x256MbABIT on dual channel, ATI X800PRO, Audigy 2. ------> BF2 settings low to medium playing in 1024x768.

I would go for 2 x1900xt on crossfire, I currently have one in my pc, only one..

It runs bf2 on high, 1280×1024, 6×aa, average 130 fps, usual something like 160..

With no doubt in my mind go with the 2 x1900's

[ps I run bf2142 beta everything high, 6x aa, 90-100 fps]

ati suggests 550 watt for crossfire btw

I have 2x1900xt

Crossfire isn't worth it! Its ok when it works but i've had so many problems with BF2 and the drivers! ( http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=32092 )

Half the time i play with it disabled anyway cos it crashes me back to desktop or i get weird flickering or checkerboard effects.

1 card i get average 60-80 fps
2 cards = average 80-90 fps

Edit: thats on high with x6 aa btw

Dont waste ya money, i wish i didn't!

my rig is similar to the one you wanna build... it's a Athlon 64 X2 4200+ with 2 GB ram (and 2 GB more on the way) and I have a X800 GTO.. I have a 17 " CRT screen with 1024 x 768. I'm running all video settings in high, and I got a average on 60-70 FPS..

I would have purchased a X 1950, but I didn't have the money at the time..

PC Spec
Thermaltake Tai Chi Case
620W Liberty PSU
Asus PSWD2-E Premium
Pentium 4 805D (@ 3.8ghz)
OCZ 2GB  PC8000 DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
ATI Radeon X1900 Crossfire Edition
ATI Radeon X1900 XT
2 x 74Gb Raptor

I am using Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP 24" but i think my resolution is only on 1280x1024... also i play mainly SF so fps may be higher in vanilla annnnnnd only other thing i can think of is i use "renderer.drawfps 1" where as he may have been quoting fraps or summin?

Also, just  thought.. my cards are at stock speed with all the CCC settings maxed out, not just BF2.

A lot of money wasting words in this thread. Someone gave an good advice i want to quote, but i would rather change something. Instead of the 7600GT get one of the new and cheap 7950 GT (not GX2!) and wait until DX10 cards arrive.

130 fps is bullshit if you ask me, i see your screenie, i also see the server has about 3 people in it, when it's full the fps will shoot downward. I know that Evilmonkeyslayer has an equally impressive pc and he gets around 90 fps i think. Topic wise, i'd go with 2 cards over one but in the long run the single would be better, the choice is yours.

Its fine if you dont believe me, I have some benchmarks from fraps in a 64 player server:

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
44750,    320118,   0, 308, 139.792

Thanks for all the posts. After many hours spent on reading forums, reviews and such stuff, I think I finally made my decision:

BFG 7900GT

other specs would be: M2N32-SLI-Deluxe, Athlon 64 X2 4200+, 2x1Gb dual channel RAM by Corsair, Audigy 4. (this is actually a HardOCP.com system said to have enough room and stability for massive OC)

I might still add one later, or just hold on to this budget card until DX10 will be out and doing good.

Any comments?

yo i sugest you get a intel Duo cpu 2gigs of ram and the single X1950 because the double cards are problem prone...oh and make it yourself its cheaper and better that way...

yo, thanks for the suggestion, actually I think Ill cut the cash further down by getting the BFG7900GT. OC the shit out of it and waiting for DX10 cards to be out.
P.S. all my rigs are made by myself (maybe that's the first reason to some weiiiiiiiird blue screens Im getting lately...LOL)

fail. core 2 duos can break the 100fps mark

OK, fine, but Im curious. I dont know much about tech, and I heard that anything above 60FPS is useless (or not noticeable) on most screens because of 'vertical tearing'? can anybody explain what this means, please? does it have to do with the refresh rate?

Why did you decide to go with the Athlon 64 X2 4200+ anyway?

I am getting the AM2, thought it was the best cpu for a reasonable price (under €200). why not? or which would be better?

http://azerty.nl/producten/product_over … ntel-.html

But its all your choice, I have the e6600, and ive never been happier with a processor before! I suggest you search on the internet for some reviews about the conroes..

human eye sees at 72 fps...  but you see, if you get AVG of 99fps then when you go into huge battles it only drops to 80 or 70...
