Just a Question, What are you doing for HD and CD/DVD?  Are you scavenging off the old system?  If so the Old HD may negate any performance gains with the Memory and CPU.

Since the C2D parts have been dropping in price I will be switching to a Core 2 Duo setup.

E6300 or E6400 ($190 or $235)
ASRock 775Dual-VSTA mobo ($56)
2gb of DDRII 533 ($180)
and I haven't decided on the video yet...either a X850XT or a 7600GT ($116 or $135)
Xclio 500W PSU ($50)
Raidmax case with side window ($33)

so I'm in the $6-700 range now...waiting a few months to see what comes of these prices...most of them should drop a little

Oh and the HD is only a year old I just bought it last year, the CD-RW/DVD drive is not quite as old as the computer but is still kind of old but it should work

Now the limit is ~$700 since I got a little more money...

With the E6300 and the X850XT it comes to ~$630 depending where I buy from

With E6400 just adds ~$45 to the total price

Which is better video card? X850XT is $30 cheaper so if the performance is = to that of the 7600GT I will stick with it but if the 7600GT is a huge improvement than I'll spend the extra.

thank you for all your help!

Core2 looks awesome..but not on my budget

The AM2 setup I found,

AMD X2 4200+
some ECS mobo
same 6800XT
pqi Turbo 1GB DDR2 800
same case since it looks awesome and has good airflow

One question on power supplies...the connectors...the mobo is 24pin but most of the psu are 20+4 pin...will those work or is there an adaptor I would have to buy or what...cuz 20+4 is much cheaper and I could get a better one

Will this 550W work?

Sorry guys but on my budget there isnt room for a sound card...not right now anyway...I'm just trying to get a new comp together pretty quick that way in the event of my current one dying (ETA...well...soon lol) I can just order the parts and will only be stuck w/o a rig for maybe a week

Same type of deal with the video card...6800XT is good enough to run the games until the DX10 cards next year and its cheap (and a million times better than my FX5200 I have right now!)

All parts planned on being ordered from www.NewEgg.com seeing as they are cheap, and it will be easier to get them all from the same place.
thows mobos are AGP try and get a PCI-E it will last longer in terms of up grading i hav an agp mobo and its going bui bui in  3 more months till i can get a new mobo prosesser and ram and vid card to go with my AM2 mobo

*sorry read your quote wrong and thought you quoted my most recent post, so heres some info on the ASRock core 2 duo board anyway.*

No they also have a PCI-E socket. They actually have both, and they have both DDR and DDR2 capabilities. Of course you cannot run both of them at the same time but having both makes this a great upgrade board to use for like 6 months or so.

The PCI-E is x16 connector but runs a x4 speeds...but benches show only a loss of like %3-12 making it like 5fps difference at the most.

I will buy this and wait for a lot of boards to come out or maybe I'll just buy this and wait for 6 months and buy a P5B which overclocks like crazy.
