I am completely for genetic manipulation. In my case, since I am a cancer carrier, I cannot have children. I feel for this person, so I understand in these cases. However, we are all given a place in life and destroying the natural balance (however cruel it may be) could cause problems that the human race cannot deal with.

But as far as Marconius goes, I feel for you man. If you're ever in a position to want children, apply for adoption. You sound like a caring person who could give a person a good home.

The varying goals of genetic engineering are the reason why such a big ethics debate is going on. On one hand, localized "genetic surgery" as Marconius described is a perfectly good reason to exercise the science. On the other, tweaking your kid's genes for "cosmetic" reasons ranging from giving him blue eyes instead of brown (may or may not result in a six-fingered right hand) or changing "her" to "him" (may or may not result in three toes growing out of each ear) is not. Ultimately, fashion as applied to genetics may come to suppress natural evolution, and we could suffer for it. So let's not search for a blue-hair gene, no matter how much you like anime.

genetic manipulation is neither a positive nor a negative. It is a tool. Said tool can be used for either. One could just as easily manipluate genes to yield deaf and blind humans, or manipulate it to yield more intelligent and stronger humans. <shrug> It's all a matter of who is wielding the electron microscope.

I see the potential for great positive, but that said potential can be easily used to breed a race of subservient slaves - a decided negative I'd say.

EDIT: To Marconius's point, I have Marfan's syndrome and it is a near guarantee that any children I have will as well. I second the notion that gene manipulation could be a boon in such an area.

heres what would happen

ppl w/ genetic manupulation will have larger physical strength and mental powers, while ppl w/ unaltered genes would be jealous and would say shit like: death to all unaturals! for a blue and natural world! then when a nation is against those ppl, a lot of nations would follow, then war.

as i said, go watch gundam seed and see what happens

I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was limited to crop manipulation or eliminating diseases, but religion, politics, and greed would quickly overshadow that. Anyone that thinks that it would remain solely for those purposes is seriously naive.

thats what gundams about =/ the naturals are jealous of the ppl who have manipulated genes.
