Is Gene manipulation an advantage to society or a disadvantage?? Whats your opinion.  I have provided two websites that might help provide infomation. Or they might not. Im talking all kinds of gene manipulation, genetic manipulation in crops, humans, etc, hence keep this debate OPEN.

Too much tinkering could contaminate the genepool in a way that current science couldn't predict. It's a bit of an issue in ethics.

If done correctly and responsibly, I see no problem with it.  We are however, human, so that pretty much disqualifies us on the responsibility factor...

Genetics sound like a bad idea to me. At least in anything you want to keep safe. After all, theres a reason we didn't evolve with eyes in the back of our head.

As for crops, it could be dangerous, but I see few problems in the ethics area.

I think for crops it would be good in order to develop the perfect grain. This would do a lot of good in third world countries to combat malnutrtion

I think it's too dangerous for use on humans.  Genetic power makes nukes look like a firecracker.

So glad to see intelligent debate in here...

I am completely for genetic manipulation.  In my case, since I am a cancer carrier, I cannot have children.  Any of my kids will have the cancer that I have and I could not for the life of me put someone else through the same ordeal.  With genetic manipulation, they'd be able to repair the damage to the gene and stop the cancer from occurring (Lower left leg of X chromosome 13 in my case).  Allowing genetic manipulation will also give us more insight as to how the genes actually work and can lead to medical advancements in diseases like AIDS, HIV, Leukemia, and the like.

If it used for legitimate reasons (ie; cancer, birth defects, etc...) then I would be all for it. I think when people start asking for Brad Pitt babies that society is doomed.

I'm for genetic manipulation. I worry more about the benefits not being spread equally.

I am very sorry to hear that Marco. I too support genetic research for the reasons outlined in your post.

Gene manipulation is an inexorable and inevitable consequence of cientific progress. It has been happening since Mendel discovered he could determine the color os peas through inbreeding, in the 19th century, and has never stopped since.

The recent advances in genetic engineering, allowing the interchanging of genes between diferent living organisms, is something that is already changing our world and may have impacts far greater than the Internet or the Atom Bomb. But nothing can stop it, it may be slowed by puritans and politicians, but it is part of our invevitable future, as it is already present.

The problem is that it won't stop at medical cures.

i'm all in for genetik manipulation, the only problem i see is that crop get mixed up with the natural plants that then get immune over for different kemicals and stuff like that, the mixing between the plants can only be made if you stop the plant from reproducing itself, this can simply be done if you delete some few genes that make it reproduce itself and the  it is fixed the problem with this is that you cannot use the seed that you get from the crops afterwards since the seed can't make a plant so you gotta make either 1. a center that have giant corn fields that are in a total connection from the rest of the world or  2. you would have to make each seed individually and this would take way to long to make enough seeds for one season then. the first option is obviously the best but the problem is that if the enviromentalist get mad then they might attack the cornfields and spread the seeds into nature and change nature as we know it, the seeds can of course the other kind of plants but i just took corn as an example since it has spread out all over america and you can't find any corn plant in the us today that is not manipulated this we don't want to happen to other plants as well.

this is the nasty part, how much is too much?

I don't, however see a problem with developing grains that can grow in areas suffering from decades long droughts, or are more resistant to blights, it's hard to imagine something going wrong, there are worse things than an Ethipia covered in wheat
